I just played through the demo which worked totally fine and decided to buy the game immediately after. However, when I start the full version, after 20-30 seconds, the game crashes. Does anyone know of a fix for this?
that happens to me too. i just bought the game today, it better work…
Yea, its a pretty fun game. Sadly 30 seconds is not quite enough time to play it…
Hey, do you get any error message or is it a silent crash?
I can suggest some diagnostic measures;
-
Add Game Dev Tycoon to your Anti virus & Firewall exception lists as crashing within 20 seconds points towards the game being denied from running.
-
Make sure your Windows 7 is up to date with service packs.
-
Try reinstalling Game Dev Tycoon once the exceptions have been added.
-
Make sure you are running it as administrator and that your UAC isnt set too high.
Same thing here. Win7 64 bit. I can sometimes load the game. Can get to the character/company creation screen. When I submit, it instantly crashes.
Performed all steps suggested. Added exceptions to both AV and Firewall. UAC is completely off. I’m up to date on all proper windows updates. I’ve reinstalled and ran in admin mode and out of. Same results every time. Game is literally unplayable at this point. I never tried the demo mode. I’d hate to know I gave $8 willingly to have an unusable product.
Specs:
AMD Phenom 8400(TC 2.10ghz)
8GB PC2-6400 memory(4x2gb)
Nvidia Geforce 9800 GT
2TB HDD
Up to date:
Java(Keep it up for minecraft)
Video Drivers
Windows Updates
Browsers(IE/Chrome)
Latest Game version of GDT
There has to be something silly causing this on my end.
Thanks for any and all help.
have you tried disabling your internet connection? just to rule out any interference through AV or firewalls.
Just tried that and I thought it was going to work. It allowed creation of the company. Then I tried to develop a new game and the moment I clicked that it crashed again.
does it always crash when you submit the char/company name?
can you just try to let it run idly? does it still crash?
have you tried not entering any custom char/company name?
Its as the previous listed issue. Its definitely timed. After approximately 20 to 30 seconds It will crash, input or none.
Only AV is Microsoft security essentials, and that is disabled.
Firewall is turned completely off now.
I wish I could say I’ve had this problem with other games. At least then I can make sense of it.
Crashing after 20-30 seconds, has so far, been caused by a 3rd party program stopping/blocking the game.
If you could provide us with a screenshot of task manager, showing all the processes active (second tab) we would be very grateful.
You can send it to me directly at support@greenheartgames.com
/edit also just to check that you are only using one monitor, not 2 or 3 etc?
You guys dont support multiple monitor set ups? I have three screens. 2 x DVI and 1 USB HDMI converter.
Will email you the processes screen grab when I have a chance(could be tonight, as were busy packing for family trip tomorrow.) as id be interested in seeing what things arent playing nice with this game.
Multi-monitor setup should not be an issue unless you are using eyefinity or something similar which simulates a giant screen to programs. Even then, the game shouldn’t crash but the layout will be messed up.
If you have a chance, it would also be helpful too look into the Windows EventViewer and see if there are any Game Dev Tycoon specific error messages.
Thanks for your help in investigating this issue.
Your questions led me down an old path of troubleshooting I haven’t had to do in ages now. I was going to post the screen grab and then Patrick asked about the Event log and upon doing so I was met with an error involving an Nvidia component.
This is what I was met with: Faulting application name:
GameDevTycoon.exe, version: 0.0.0.0, time stamp: 0x51cf753d Faulting

Now, the cool part is googling the dll file. I was met with a link on the Nvidia forums that was similar to the issues I was having here.
So, I tried newer version drivers. Beta drivers. Nothing would work. All yielded the same crash. Downloading the 306.97 drivers was what ultimately fixed the problem I was having. Now this might affect other games, but for the time being this is the game I want to play…so for now this has resolved. Anyone else having this issue may want to seek out the same drivers located here:

This was specifically with my Nvidia 9800 GT card. YMMV with any other sort of hardware, but this was my experience and this is what fixed me up. Thanks for all of the suggestions and the quick and immediate response. The game has been playing for a few hours now and it’s a deeply addictive and fun experience. I highly recommend the product and will be sure to promote it to my friends over at my community at teh-Nook, as well as several others I frequent, among them being the Cheapassgamer community.
Thats great! Glad you got it sorted.
After a reboot and a day away, it’s back.
Same fault in the event log as before.
Installed up to date nvidia drivers and then the old ones from before and stability returns during that session of gaming(an hour or so last night.) and then this morning it does it again. Poop.
I have a friend who recently had all kinds of issues with his Nvidia drivers, the latest drivers which are designed for the Titans are not working well with older cards. He also had this problem where his drivers automatically update themselves after he has rolled back.
This never happens to me but i never allow my machine to automatically update as i refuse to be QA for software companies.
Have you checked to make sure your still using older stable drivers?
Any solution to this? I have the same thing and I’m a little annoyed I can’t play.
Tried updating drivers (currently nvidia drivers 320.49 on a GT610)
Tried shutting down all software firewalls.
Tried pulling LAN cable to eliminate internet or firewalls as a potential problem.
Tried verifying game cache.
Tried reinstalling.
Tried running as administrator.
Have you tried rolling back your Nvidia drivers ?
This is a known issue on Nvidia drivers for anything higher than version 314.22 at the moment on the 400/500/600 range cards.

I’m pretty sure I was using 311 before I updated to try and fix this issue. I’ll try that right now.
Reverted drivers to 314.07
Same issue. Game runs for about 20-30 seconds and crashes - It’s never an event based crash… Doesn’t matter if I idle or click through dialogues as fast as I can. Do you have a debug deployment .exe I can use so I can send you a call stack?
