Review of Astrid’s Pony Tales
Astrid’s Pony Tales is a strange game at first glance. In many ways it’s a typical RPG; you roam a 2D overhead grid of a world, fighting off monsters in random encounters, and aim to defeat an evil power and seal it away forever.
Then you see the characters. Ponies? Really? Is this game for little girls?
But never judge a book by its cover. The battle system was the first of its kind. Without Pony Tales, there would be no Red Dust, no Tales of the Wayfarer, no Myrune and no Beyond Human. It was truly a “Primal Fantasy”, the mother of the RPG genre itself as we know it today.
Gamers obviously saw that, as the game brought in 350k in sales for Horse-Drawn Games in its first month, and was the primary drive behind the Gamewagon’s success.
Then in May of 1985, they began selling the merch. Popularity of Astrid’s Pony Tales, along with Higurashi and Voidrunner, exploded with the release of toys and posters for the games.
And for gameplay? Though it appears a typical RPG only with ponies, one must remember that it was the first of its kind, and a game based on ponies is not considered a big seller for any other company.
Of course, I can’t be too descriptive. Everyone knows what an RPG is like, and I don’t want to give away the plot, so I apologize if this article is too vague.
The default main characters - Roslyn, Juliet, Astrea and Yuria - will forever be icons of the gaming industry, and I know they will stay in my heart for a long time.
