I’m running Win8 Pro x64, the game works fine and I’m not experiencing the audio issues reported by others - however I am experiences extremely annoying issue where turning Music off doesn’t stick - it always enables itself after short’ish period of time.
I haven’t checked if disabling Sound Effects sticks or not.
I’m having this issue as well and I’m running on win7 x64. I’ve also tried muting it in the mixer but it doesn’t stick either and each time I re-open the game the sound is back again. Another issue I have found with the mixer is that the image used for it fills the entire little window and so I can’t see the volume bar or the mute button for the game.
As far as I can tell sound effects stay off until you re-launch the game, so does fullscreen mode.

None of the options sticks. Everything turns back to default settings (on/on/full screen) after restarting the game. I use Win 7 x64.
It’s not only in Windows, I have the same problem on my Mac. The only thing working is to complete slide the volume to 0, though you will not have any sound at all…
theoryof42, I could understand them resetting when restarting the game, but the problem is that the music at least resets back to “On” even while in-game, no restarts or any such involved
Make sure you’ve got version 1.3.8 instead of 1.3.3.
Looks like I have even older, 1.3.2. So used to games letting me know when there’s updates available 
I can just install the new version over old one and continue like nothing?
Yes, I backed up my savegames just in case but it actually didn’t have any problems. Just install as normal. And apparently the last version or two–about one per day–has an update check feature.
