Take the Sorrows' Society Challenge!

If you rack up 18M before you leave the garage you can skip the 4 person office completely saving money so you can hire 6 people instantly and use medium games until your fan base is over 250k if not already well beyond that point. I try to stay in the garage until Y13 M6 W1. By the time the final office is possible I just go straight to it. If you played your cards right you’ve already got 250K fans and can start cranking out the large games. If not you’ve got medium games to work with. The medium games don’t need to be perfect, but you need one large one at 9.75 to get that AAA access. And without the R&D lab up you can’t produce AAA text games…

I’ve done it! Finally! I didn’t look up anything in the wiki. All of it was done from scratch. I didn’t make so much of it though. Sorry. :stuck_out_tongue:

Your best-seller certainly did much better than my own!

Yeah. I didn’t notice that because i already have the platinum achievement. By the way i didn’t use a publisher for that.
Did you notice i already built a hardware lab?

Building a hardware lab is straightforward enough. Now, getting people to buy a TXTBox, that’s a challenge.

TXTBox? What’s that?

A console box that serves primarily .txt files, of course!

a console with text only graphics ? XD

The CEO of the Wayfarers and and Sorrow’s Society, Sulthan Ariq and Johanna Sorrows, has collaborated on making a new console, the TXTBox. This console will certainly get you in the mood to play some Text-Based games with your notepads! So get your bucks out there and start buying this darn good console!

I guess we should become able to remove 2Dv2 graphics from console design first

I have a 42y game in progress (I always play 42y, it just feels like it plays better, to me) doing this. Did one large game so far, got around 7 for it. Lots of medium as well, of course. It might just be the product of increasing familiarity with the game, but I’m finding it easier than my last play-through.

:grey_question: Are you in the right thread? :grey_question:

If you mean a Sorrows’ Society Large game at 7, that’s fair. I wonder how much the score is penalized on Large games, for the low “technology” of a Text-Based Game in GDT.

Yes, I’m in the right thread (how do you get a sticking-tongue-out emoticon here?)

I assumed people would gather that I was talking about a Sorrows’ Society game, because it’s in this thread

I reckon it should be possible to offset the low tech score of the text-based graphics with other means. I’m just not sure what they are yet.

There are actually still modern games made with text-based gameplay. It’s the primary interaction model of some Simulation and Strategy titles. Text-based Adventures never stopped… I recently played Analogue: A Hate Story and Hate Plus, which I would classify as a Text-Based Romance Adventure/Simulation and a Text-Based Romance Adventure respectively. (Steam just tags them both as having genre “Indie”.)

Both games are beautiful, but when I think of “2D games”, “3D games”, or “Text-Based Games”, I think of the interaction model. Analogue and Hate Plus could either be 2D games (based on the art assets they use) or Text-Based (based on how you play the game).

As someone who is willing to forgive almost* any fault in a game’s graphics if the world design is good enough, it kind of frustrates me how central graphics quality is in determining the success of a game. Does that really reflect the standards of the gaming industry as a whole?

*Not quite any fault. There is one thing that always makes me grimace and that I can’t forgive. That is blocky 3D. Early 3D titles are unplayable to me in a way that hits no other game before or after. It kind of stings to make 3DV1 games in Game Dev Tycoon. It’s critical to advancing in the game, and yet I go, ‘egh’ when I think about how those games must look!

What about Phoenix Wright series?

Lots of text, but not text-based. They use more conventional interactions like pixel-hunting and visual examinations to advance the plotline. 2D Graphics by both measures.

They could have conceivably been made text-based, but they weren’t.

Those are good games. I almost wonder if the Phoenix Wright series is why ‘Law Adventure’ is a Great Combination in Game Dev Tycoon.

Beat Wayfarers, didn’t beat illiterates.

Getting closer to Sorrows’ Society.

I made another attempt at the challenge… and didn’t do as well!

It seems that Sorrows Society (focusing on Adventures) beat out Textbox Stratcorp (focusing on Strategy games) for score.

Come on guys, just make 20+ top hits and beat my score
