I recently completed a playthrough of Game Dev Tycoon without using any graphical technology besides Text-Based.
Do note that Sorrows’ Society is not an example of the Grocers’ Apostrophe. My founder’s name was Johanna Sorrows. The company and its fanbase were literally her society. I like to imagine that Johanna Sorrows was a refugee from a horrible illiterate future who traveled back in time to set right what once went wrong, and also to produce Romance games for a more appreciative audience.
I achieved 62,398,942 points with text-based graphics. Can you beat my score under the same restriction?
I looked up only one thing while doing this playthrough. That was which genres Alternative History is good for. I wanted to make one to go along with the time traveller from an illiterate future storyline that I was playing to, but I don’t believe I’ve ever played an Alt. History game in my life. I’m only familiar with it as a literary genre.
I didn’t strictly optimize by memory, either. I created a horror-simulation and two ninja-adventures, for instance, among a few other flavorful diversions. A big part of what makes the game fun for me is imagining the cultural impact of the company you build and the fan reactions to your quirkier games.
You can’t, actually. You can add Stereoscopic 3D to your engine while you’re doing the Sorrows’ Society challenge, but you won’t be permitted to add it to games.
I named my engines after cities… moving from Mecca to Mecca again, moving to the west. So from Mecca, Medina, Ankara, Athens, Kerkira, Rome, Vatican, Monaco…
