Must be a private school, if you had to get a tablet.
Internet connections cost money. Especially fast connections. I doubt you’re torrenting multiple GB games on $10 dial-up.
And yet your biggest concern is gaming. You must have been pretty well off until just recently.
Being spoiled means being accustomed to getting what you want, when you want it, often without earning it. In your post, above, you called me spoiled because I have a job and earn my own money. That’s about as backwards as you can get. I’m very lucky to have a job in this economy, but I earn the money I have.
On the other hand, your “my family can’t afford food but I HAVE TO HAVE my video games!” attitude is the very definition of spoiled.
Let’s take a look at your post.
“Now… what I read out of this message, are poor people not allowed to play games? Are they only allowed to play Facebook or free mobile games?”
Given that you say this as if mobile phones are as affordable and accessible as advertising copy, it seemed likely that you had a phone yourself. Usually, when a person declares that the average impoverished family has a box of iPhones lying around, it’s because they’re using their own level of luxury as a baseline by which to measure the rest of humanity. Apparently you just got some bad information.
Thus invalidating your comment about free wifi. Since routers don’t work with dial-up, you must have DSL or even cable.
I don’t try to play it on any settings because I have never owned a computer that meets the minimum system requirements. The computer you got for free is better than any computer I’ve ever bought.
Need I remind you that you went out of your way to attack me over a post that had nothing to do with you? You’re unemployed, you admit to having everything handed to you, you say your parents don’t have enough money for food but your biggest complaint is that video games are too expensive, and you call a part-time employee spoiled for earning what he has. I shouldn’t even have to tell you how messed up that is. What is wrong with this generation?
Apparently I read your own post better than you did, considering you’ve either already forgotten or have chosen to ignore half of what you said.
The key point here is that the life you describe is a lot better than most people on the planet will ever get to experience, and probably better than half the people on the forum have right now.
I wouldn’t pick on you just for pirating games, because I’ve learned to turn a blind eye to that. It’s that you claim to be poor in an attempt to justify piracy that I find insulting. And maybe I’m wrong, but I think a lot of people on this forum who are worse off than you would be offended by what you’ve said.
I won’t respond to you further, as Charlie has called for peace. This will be my final post directed at you or in response to anything you say. I wasn’t even going to post this, actually, but I felt the need to point out some issues with what you’re saying.
OH YEAH? WELL IF YOU THINK YOU’RE SO COOL THEN INSERT OFFENSIVE COMMENT ABOUT YOUR MOTHER HERE COUPLED WITH SOME PROFANITY ALL WRITTEN IN ALL CAPITALS WHERE US TRULY COOL KIDS DON’T USE CAPS LOCK WE HOLD DOWN SHIFT.
(Lol at the forum software not letting me make an all caps post)
Did he say that he went to a private school? Did he say it was required? No. He said that he had one. Same way I use my tablet. I don’t go to a private school - yet I have a tablet. I must live in a mansion, according to your standards.
Games aren’t multiple GB, unless you’re torrenting new games. New games are the ones that range from 1-5 GB, and I have unlimited internet. You don’t need to be rich to afford it, you just need to search for a company that is affordable.
My dad has an iPhone for work. It is 100% work supplied.
My brothers, & my mom use a family plan. We aren’t the ‘rich’ family you say just because we have phones. I don’t even have a phone myself. My parents could hardly afford the house I moved to two years ago (I’m currently living there now,) and we went through financial troubles for a year. Just because you have iPhones doesn’t make your rich.
So, because you’re not buying good computers, you’re complaining because his uncle passed away and he got the desktop that he owns? All I need is a new graphics card for mine - oh, I must be a spoiled brat now
You also aren’t complaining about being dirt poor and saying anyone who buys things with money is a jerk. I’m not attacking LineLiar for being a poor person who has nice things. Poor people can have nice things, and it’s awesome when they do. I’m pointing out to LineLiar that s/he does indeed have a lot of nice things.
When I was a kid and dad brought home that trashed TV and VCR, it was a blessing. That was all we had, and I loved them both to death. When I started school, I bragged about that VCR. I was just so happy to have something. The other kids, of course, made fun of me, but that’s a different story. My point is, for someone who has so little, LineLiar really doesn’t appreciate his/her computers, tablet, high speed internet. To just take all of that for granted is…wow. I’m worried I’m overusing the word spoiled, but I can’t think of a term that fits better. Is LineLiar desensitized to their own nice things, or did multiple computers and high-speed internet become a basic human right when I wasn’t looking?
If LineLiar had said “I don’t want to pay $60 for The Sims 3, so I torrented it,” I wouldn’t have commented. I disagree, but whatever. I have ethical issues with piracy, but I don’t care enough to push my views on other people, and I also have issues with EA’s business practices, so there’d be no need to comment.
If LineLiar had said “I had to torrent The Sims 3 because I’m poor and can’t afford it,” well, that’s kind of weird to me. I still wouldn’t have commented, but why does The Sims 3 matter at all if you’re poor?
No, what actually got my attention is when I responded to something Killertoad said and voiced my opinion on piracy and entitlement. LineLiar apparently took the comment personally and called me spoiled for buying things with money that I earn from a job.
“If you get games with buying them, then you’re spoiled. Some people don’t have any money for games and can’t buy them, you can… you’re more spoiled then them aren’t you?”
Earning money to buy your own things is pretty much the opposite of spoiled, since the definition of spoiled is having things handed to you. This was an unprovoked personal attack, build around an insult, and even used a word in absolutely the wrong way (which is a pet peeve of mine). That was worth a comment, but that’s not what upset me.
LineLiar went on to reason that poor people should be allowed to pirate because they can’t afford games, including specific mention of mobile games and The Sims 3, which is a statement that assumes all poor people have gaming PCs and mobile phones and high speed internet (for torrenting, of course). Like I said, it’s great when poor people can have nice things, but what about the people that don’t? Why would LineLiar assume all poor people are as fortunate as s/he is? Furthermore, if LineLiar is the poorest person in the room, then what do they call someone who has less? The condescending line at the end sealed the deal.
"Think about that. "
I admit it, I lost my temper. LineLiar’s response pretty much confirmed every single thing that upset me in the first place, though. Mentioning all of their nice things but then talking like none of it matters. LineLiar doesn’t seem to appreciate any of the nice things they have, and that’s spoiled.
How does the whole “Oh I only have a laptop, and a pretty good desktop, and a tablet for school, and high-speed internet, and a wireless router. I’m super poor, I have no luxuries, I have to torrent games because I need to have them but can’t afford them. People who can buy their own games are such spoiled jerks, why doe people even have jobs? What’s work?” attitude not bother you at all? You don’t think LineLiar sounds even a little bit spoiled, talking all of those things for granted?
Another problem is priorities. If money were tight, video games wouldn’t even show up on my list of priorities. I’ve pawned playstation games for food before, and I’ll do it again if need be. If I can’t afford the games I want, I look instead at what I can afford. And if I can’t afford anything, even food, I look at what I have that I can re-sell. LineLiar doesn’t have the same priorities. LineLiar appears to put video games above all else, and asserts that being poor gives them the right to download for free, but only as long as they don’t like the game, of course.
LineLiar specifically mentioned The Sims 3. According to GameAgent.com, The Sims 3 requires 6.1 GB of hard disk space. And that’s just the base game, with no expansions. 6.1 GB would take weeks on dial-up.
The point I was making is that if you can’t afford to eat but have a high-speed internet connection, you can totally cut that off and buy some bread and bologna.
I live with my parents, partly because I’m too poor to move out and partly because they rely on my income to live the way we’re living. All three of us work. Dad pays for the cable, the internet, and our phone service. Mom pays the utilities and house payment. I buy the food and help out with bills (particularly bills that aren’t part of our general expenses, like medical bills). All three of us, individually, actually run a pretty tight budget, but working together we have a lot of nice stuff. If I lose my job, we have to cut back. None of the things dad pays for are necessities. The internet would go first so he can afford to feed us. If money gets tighter from there, the phones go next, then the cable. If he loses his job, we can ultimately afford to keep living here on mom’s income alone, and if I’m working and he’s not then we could proceed as usual minus subscription services.
Notice, however, that we have plans for if something happens and we can’t afford to live like we’re living. If we can’t afford food, we cancel internet service. Using the internet to complain about being too poor just strikes me as a problem with a painfully obvious solution. You have enough money each month to pay for the internet service, so cancel it and use that money to pay for food.
I love using the internet, it’s the only way I have to stay in touch with my best friends. But I’m not so attached to it that I’m not prepared to do without it when times get tough. As someone who has memories of going without food and going without internet connectivity, I’d much rather go without the internet. Assuming there’s even a choice. If dad and I both lose our jobs around the same time, weeeell…
Of course it doesn’t. But are you happy to have those iPhones? Do you acknowledge that those iPhones are nice things that you’re lucky to have?
Or do you believe all impoverished people have a right to free iPhones and that they’re superior to people who pay for iPhones?
Good computers cost money. Why is that not part of the equation for you?
My first computer broke down shortly after I lost my first job. I had a little in savings, but no income. I did some odd jobs for chump change, and pawned some of my stuff, and within about a year I managed to come up with $250 for a new (to me) computer. It was technically an upgrade from my first computer, but at the time I bought it, it was about four years outdated. I loved that computer, I was happy as hell to finally have one again. It was the best computer I could afford, and I thought it was great.
Now that computer is broken, too. I’m currently using the family computer, in the living room (which I bought as a gift for everyone while at my first job). It’s a 2007 model, and the integrated video card is incompatible with just about every game newer than The Movies. But hey, if this computer ween’t here and functioning, I wouldn’t have any computer at all. This is a good computer, because it’s here and it works. It may not be a powerful computer, but it’s what we have and it does its job.
You misunderstand. The issue is that s/he has a nice computer their uncle left them, and they seem to take it for granted. “My uncle passed away and left me a pretty good computer.” is not at all a problem. I’m sorry to hear about LineLiar’s uncle and I’m glad LineLiar has a good computer. But read over LineLiar’s posts. It sounds a lot less like “I’m very poor but I have a nice computer my uncle left me” and more like “I have a pretty good computer my uncle left me, but I’m super poor and anyone who bought their own computer is spoiled.”
Not necessarily. There’s nothing wrong with acknowledging a problem. I’d like to have a computer of my own, again, I just can’t afford one at the moment. My playstation stopped working, and I won’t be able to get it fixed for a few months. Everyone has issues.
The distinction is how you deal with those issues. Are you going to prioritize that graphics card below food and shelter, and then take care of your needs first while scrimping and saving any extra you get to eventually get that graphics card? Or are you going to assert that you deserve a free one because you’re broke and call everyone with a job an a-hole for being able to buy stuff?
It’s the latter option that would make you a spoiled brat, and the latter option also solves nothing.
Close enough.
Also, if you’re too broke to be getting the initial game, why would you want to get expansion packs, that will take even more weeks to download?
I might be rude when I say this, but it kind of sounds like you’re on the verge of being homeless. I respect that your are grateful for having what you have and not asking for more- which is hard in a modern day. But in the way that you’re putting it, you sound like you’re on the verge of homelessness and that you can hardly even manage to buy a loaf of bread.
fair enough.
I choose option A. I don’t even have a phone, just an outdated iPod from a pawn shop my parents got me for my 11th birthday. I’m grateful for that.
All righty then.[quote=“Teelo, post:76, topic:8993, full:true”]
I usually rip them out of my keyboard, cause they get annoying if I accidentally toggle them on.

Brilliant. I turn caps lock on by accident all the time, and I never thought to just remove the key.
