Load Error when restarting game

I just booted the game for the first time since since the update from 1.4.2 to 1.4.3.

Now I get this:
Error
Could not initialize loaded game: SyntaxError: Unexpected end of input

Screen is black, with a tiny load bar on it. Music is playing.
I can call up the menu with the Esc button. Save and Continue are greyed out.
If I choose manual load, I can choose to load the Auto Save or any other slot with a saved game, however doing so will present me with the same error.

If I choose to start a new game, screen stays black with the load bar on it, but I can hear the game starting up ‘behind’ it.

Closing down the application and restarting does nothing to improve the situation.
On the up-side, I can easily replicate the error, if it can somehow help you guys fix this.

As it seems now, I’m totally unable to play the game. Please advise.

I’m running 1.4.3 (Steam) on Win 7 Sp 1

EDIT:
Bonus info!
I got the game running again by starting a new game from the menu, then having the game save to the Autosave slot, and then restarting the game having it load the autosave.

I still get the error if I try to load my ‘old’ savegame from 1.4.2, so I guess it’s maybe something screwed up by the update ?

EDIT:
I appreciate if there’s a way to resque my old save from 1.4.2.
It’s the longest game I’ve played, just having opened the R&D lab and begun research.
It would be a bummer to start all over because an update screwed up my save file.

You should be happy that you can play the game!!! Since the update to 1.4.2 i cant play the game because of a black screen. And yes i tried every possible solution thats mentiond here in the forum or from the support.

Never the less, the fact that the 1.4.3 update somehow screwed up my savefiles, has to be brought to attention, or it may happen again the next time the game is updated.

It seems that it may have nothing to do with the update at all, but something common.

It’s a fact now that I have to play an entire game in one session, because as soon as I close down the game, restart it, and try to reload any game, I get this error message.

Please @PatrickKlug, @DanielKlug, @Charlie or anyone connected to GHG, I need help on this issue.

Any information you need I’ll provide, because I cannot play the game, save it, and continue at a later time.

I’m running the 1.4.3 Steam release on a Win 7 Home Premium 64 with SP1.
Steam Cloud is enabled, and syncs on shutdown of the game.
Game files are verified.

Core i7 920
12 GB RAM
Radeon HD 7970
Samsung 830 256GB SSD (System drive)
Seagate 1.5 TB HDD (Game drive)

I never had trouble with 1.3.9 at all, but I did uninstall it before installing the Steam version.

EDIT: I’ve come to notice that the old savefile location folder and it’s contents hasn’t been deleted, even though I uninstalled 1.3.9. Deleting it manually does nothing to help the situation.

Hey!

Just for reference, although we try to be everywhere at once, sometimes we fail :unamused:

Re Error Could not initialize loaded game: SyntaxError: Unexpected end of input

Many Thanks for your feedback.
It would be very helpful if you could send us the save file.

To send us the save files please follow these instructions:
Location of the containing folder:

On Windows 8 and Under:
Send us the file _file__0.localstorage contained in the Local Storage folder.

C:/Users/YOURUSER/Appdata/Local/Game Dev Tycoon/Local Storage/
where YOURUSER is your Windows user name.

To View the App Data folder please allow viewing of Hidden Files and Folder;
http://windows.microsoft.com/en-gb/windows7/show-hidden-files

Please link to this thread when you send us your save games and then I will compile a bug report using all of this information for the devs to investigate. Send this Information to support@greenheartgames.com

After you have sent us your save games i would suggest re installing via steam;
To do this;
Right click --> Delete local content --> Game is now gone. --> Click on Play game --> Steam begins downloading.

Here is a convoluted video that explains many aspects of Steam during the install/uninstall process (incase you want a lot more information about Steam)

Just to make sure you get the right file.

Isn’t this supposed to be

C:\Users\YOURUSER\AppData\Local\Game Dev Tycoon - Steam\Local Storage\

for the Steam Version ?

It just hit me!
I may actually have an idea of what goes wrong here.

I have a HUGE collection on Steam (300+ titles).
Way more that would fit on an average sized HDD.
So I’ve had to utilize the Steam clients option to install on multiple drives.

Game Dev Tycoon is installed on a different drive, than the actual Steam Client.
And I noticed that turning off Cloud Save and deleting the files in located in
*C:\Users\YOURUSER\AppData\Local\Game Dev Tycoon - Steam*, did in fact NOT remove the savefiles from within the game itself.

This tells me that the actual save data is stored elsewhere.
And I suspect that you’re using folders in the native Steam client path to do exactly that.

Now…what would happen if that drive is almost full, with only a few MB of free space left ?

I suspect that I’d end up with incomplete save files…and all of a sudden the Could not initialize loaded game: SyntaxError: Unexpected end of input message makes a lot more sense.

I’ll be sure to free up some space some time tomorrow evening (GMT+1) and do some experimenting.
And off course I’ll post feedback in this thread

I promised you some feedback on this.

It seems that freeing up some space on the drive where my Steam client is installed, actually did the trick.
Uninstalled a small game, and I have not had any truble since then.
Off course, the savegames already corrupted doesn’t work, and Steam Cloud synced the bad files, so no help there.
Luckily GDT is not a heavy game that demands a lot of time to progress in, so I’ll just accept the losses (as if I had a choice)

Guess the question is if it’s severe enough for you guys, to actually do something about it, because most players doesn’t hoard games like I do, even though quite a number of Steam users do this. (It’s those darn sales )
