Workshop Modders: My Tips for Splitting Up Your Work

Dear Modders,

Those of you that are building dozens of topics and platforms together into one mod on the Workshop should consider splitting your mods apart. Sometimes when I see a large scale mod that will add almost 100 topics and 20 new platforms I won’t select it because that is a LOT of new content to take in at once!

Not to mention some of your work may overlap with others in which case users may have to decide whose mod to keep and whose to abandon.

If I were to put a lot of content on the Workshop, I would break it apart like this (please keep in mind this is one person’s opinion):

  • Come up with a naming convention. “FutureTech - NAMEOFSPECIFICMODHERE”. That way anyone who loves my work would know instantly that they are getting something from my same pack. SnowyTerror on the Workshop has even opted for similar pics for each of his mods.

  • Create corporations for your platforms and release each corporation independently. Bitten 8 has released GrAndroid as its own mod and also has a Steam Sphere mod. Grapple, Nimbus, and others appear to be following the same tactic.

  • Split topic mods into genres. There are so many great ideas out there but unfortunately it seems like I have to install 80% that I don’t like or agree with to get the 20% that is brilliant.

  • Finally, Please label your mod a work in progress if its not done! This is a HUGE problem with the Steam Workshop in general and it has caused games like Shadowrun Returns to see less success than expected in their Workshop because of it.

Hopefully someone will find these tips of value, and I look forward to playing around with all of the great new mods that are coming our way!

Here’s another tip:
##Be quality over quantity:
Throwing a bunch of topics and consoles and researches WILL NEVER GET YOU somewhere
You must put a lot of effort in to the mod. For example look at my Drandroid mod: It has only 1 platform. But it took a lot to make that platform photo, don’t take a google photo and edit it abit (transparent background). Create your own platform picture. (I used Photoshop)

This is the only tip that got my in the first page of “popular this week”
