Why do some games outsell the custom console they are released on?

I made a few custom consoles, and I noticed something that happens quite a lot: sometimes, you release a game for this console, and the game outsells the platform.

For example, my ByteSystem sold 8.5m units, but I released a game on that console that sold 13m units. How is that possible ?

Some people just like to buy games as gifts for their friends even if their friends don’t have your console

Well, seriously, I think that should be fixed…

Did you make any mmos and expansions?

Nope, I never make MMos, only “regular” games

Well then, yes, the extra games were bought as duplicate gifts or replacements for broken disks and cartridges.

Ok, that makes sense ! Thanks for the explanation

4.5m replacements ? Oh man, I should ask the players not to play football with the game ahah

In my hometown, which is a harbour town, the fisherman string CD and DVDs along their masts to each end of the boat to discourage the Seagulls from lollygagging. I have no idea where they get from though, probably old 90’s music and movies

The sales you see are monthly subscriptions.
Or Seagull Defense Systems, like @Charlie said

Games do push console sales, but not enough in my opinion. It does seem like my best games reliably outsell my console systems…

True ! I think good games should “boost” a little bit more the console sales too !
