I have been reading through the forums and have noticed many disagreeing about Shooters being a legitimate genre. I would like to see votes on yes or no. I could care less about your reasoning but its welcome. Keep in mind that when you go to conventions like E3 they have an entire section devoted to "shooters" and both G4TV and E3 labels Shooters as a genre.
My opinion is that it is a legitimate genre mainly because everyone I've talked to have said when I asked them what genre they think of when they hear title's like COD, Halo and Battlefield even GTA they all said shooter first. Then I ask them what games they think of when I say Action they point to Fighting games like Mortal Kombat and Teken.
Again Yes for if you believe Shooters to be its own genre and No if you believe otherwise.
Nope.
First Person and Third Person are just the viewpoints the game delivers.
You can have a First Person Adventure Game (Amnesia a machine for pigs) Or a Third Person Adventure Game (Syberia)
The genre is "Adventure"
The FP/TP Viewpoint is just a feature of the game much like Savegames and openworld are.
Shooters could be a topic but a shooter can already fit into many of the other topics like “military Action/RPG” “Scifi Action RPG” etc
A mechanic.
Examples: Fallout 3 and Skyrim are a RPG with FPS and TPS view options. Portal 2 is a Puzzle game with a FPS view.
A type of Action genre. Although, it makes it easier to name FPS its own genre since its so common.
Examples: Call of Duty and Halo, it would make more sense to call them “FPS” than “Action”.
Should FPS should be its own genre?: Yes, so we can make the classification simpler, but there is another meaning too (so far as I know right now, just two). Even though both meanings can fit in to one game or just the first meaning being used.
Shooter:
1.FPS would be more accurate for a genre, because “shooter” sounds more of a single person.
Should Shooter should be its own genre?: No, too vague.
