Use same save on steam?

So with 20 hours played on Game Dev Tycoon pre-steam, I was hoping to be able to continue using my save on the steam edition, however, even when I copy over my saves from the pre-steam GDT, when I go into game it still wants me to start a new game, so I did so hoping I could load up my game from the menu, and I couldn’t…So, finally I deleted the save in my steam folder and once again copied my original saves, and still it wants me to start a new game. Any help?

Did you copy/paste all the files and folders in the original Game Dev tycoon Folder?

Also did you try to go to the menu and “Load”

Yep, did both, for some reason it didn’t work for me.

Are you playing it while online on Steam? If so, Steam will force to up or download to cloud,

Try starting the game from the steam folder

I just tried that and i could access my pre steam games

I have been yes, I had not thought of that, thank you. I will try it soon and post if it works for me, have to go out.

//EDIT: Just tested it out, it does work if I run from steam folder but unfortunately it means it doesn’t track hours on steam or give steam achievements.

I hope that gets changed soon, would like to be able to play my old saves whilst counting game hours and earning cheevos.

I think you can do this by after started the game from the folder once and then have steam upload this new save game to Cloud.
Then Cloud should have your pre steam saves stored.

Hey guys,

Firstly we do not advise running Game Dev Tycoon from the exe in the folder. This will be patched.

Secondly, although we wanted to add the facility to load your old saves, it seems that it may not be working fully as intended, We will investigate this.

Many Thanks for the feedback!

Okay, thank you for the speedy response guys. Can’t wait for the patch in the meantime I’ll start a new game and see what new things 1.4 has to offer. x)

If you guys really want to play your version 5 game, its actually quite simple to do.

Firstly direct yourself to
"Steam\userdata[yourID]\239820\remote"

Open the one you wish you replace with your original. Make sure the one you wish to replace matches. I.E slot_auto from original to slot_auto new one.

Backup the “Steam\userdata[yourID]\239820\remote” folder so we have a redundancy plan in case things go south.
The locations are based on windows vista/7 so your location might vary depending on your OS. Similar concept though.

  1. Open your old file__0.localstorage with sqllite which is located “C:\Users\LOGGED IN USER\AppData\Local\Game Dev Tycoon\Local Storage”
  2. Locate slot_auto in the sqllite viewer.
  3. Double click the value opening the data.
  4. Copy all the data from top to bottom.
  5. Open “Steam\userdata[yourID]\239820\remote” slot_auto with a good text editor.
  6. Select all inside, paste over the new data.
  7. Save.
  8. Find Game Dev Tycoon in the steam application.
  9. Right click on it and choose properties.
  10. Click updates, and uncheck cloud synchronization.
  11. Launch Game Dev Tycoon via steam, load your save game.
  12. If all went well, you should be greeted with

Updated Version
This save game has been imported from an older version of Game Dev Tycoon. We have re-balanced the game, added new consoles, increased the storyline (runs for 35 years) and added a couple new features. You should be able to continue this save game without issues but if you want to get the full re-worked experience, please consider started a new game.

If you are greeted with a boxed error, your copy and paste went south. Restore and try again.
Good luck and enjoy developing games!

Thanks for the effort you put into your reply man, I appreciate it. I’ll be sure to give that a go later on.

Hey guys, Just a correction for my post. We probably won’t be patching the ability to run from the exe in the game folder.
Though you should be aware that you will lose the functions steam provides if you do this.

Can you import saves from the Demo version to the full one?
