those are topics that are missing from the game
sandbox
care
family
so what do you guys think?
Isnât sandbox already kind of covered with the âOpen Worldâ development option?
The other two are interesting thoughts though
what do you mean by care?
Sandbox and Open World are completely different things, but a sandbox game HAS to be open world.
For example, Final Fantasy VI is an Open World game, but not a Sandbox game.
Minecraft, in the contrary, is a Sandbox Open World game.
A sandbox doesnât have to open world, it just improves it
GTA is Open World, but not sandbox.
Actually GTA is also a Sandbox game.
You do not have to follow the storyline, but of course its not as much a sandbox game like minecraft.[quote=âDadrik, post:4, topic:8262â]

Final Fantasy is a Fantasy/RPG with open world features, plain and simple
Most sandbox games would fall under either adventure or simulation. If you mean GTA or Saints Row style city-roaming sandbox, itâs adventure (possibly multi-genre with action). If itâs The Sims, Sim City, Spore, etc. style you-make-everything sandbox, itâs simulation (life, city, and evolution, respectively).
The only thing I see missing in this delicate ecosystem is a âcrimeâ topic, or some other descriptor that covers the GTA series and other crime titles (like The Godfather). As someone pointed out to me some time ago, Saints Row is handily covered by comedy.
Also, what do you mean by care? Like a nursing home simulator? Wouldnât that sort of fall under hospital?
If by family topic you mean a game about raising a family, thatâd fall under life.
Typical sandbox games:
Minecraft, Take On Mars, Kerbal Space Program
Alright lets say you spent 10m on an engine on 3dv5 1 week later you research v6 and donât have enough capitol to spend on a new engine on v6. all you would have to do is click upgrade and upgrade your engine to v6.
I guess this reply belongs in some other topic i assume
Some topics that come to mind:
Crime (GTA, Saints Row, Mafia, etc.)
Police (SWAT, L.A. Noire, True Crime, etc.)
Steampunk (Bioshock)
LA Noire is a detective game, and I think Bioshock would fall under sci-fi. Steampunk is a subgenre of sci-fi, but then again, so is cyberpunk.
Ideally, weâll be able to make any well known game with an appropriate topic/genre combo without making the topic list redundant. A good start would be replacing cyberpunk with crime, since all cyberpunk games are also sci-fi games.
Would a police game count as a crime game, just from the other side? It still has criminals as a primary theme, but as antagonists rather than protagonists. This is debatable, but ultimately up to Greenheart Games.
I think the current system, which is using one term to mean many things (i.e. a spy action game might be Goldeneye 007 or Tom Clancyâs Ghost Recon, a fantasy RPG might be Final Fantasy III or Dark Souls) is a good idea, it just misses a few.
Then again, i think Bioshock is around Sci-Fi Puzzler because if you think of it, it is a Sci-Fi game with a whole bunch of different puzzles mixed in, rather than an Action Sci-Fi like Bioshock 2.
I would rather see more than less, I like my cyberpunk and steampunk genres . I read a series of books which are categorised as Urban Sci-fi Fantasy based on a futuristic earth (technology wise) with Demons and Angels running about and a heroine who is hard as nails and armed to teeth. If that was a game i would have issues picking a topic in Game Dev Tycoon. I think Cyber and Steampunk games are often a Fantasy Sci-Fi mix which is why they get their own genres.
I think like Charlie: Cyberpunk and Steampunk, are Fantasy-SciFi mixes, but to special to be just SciFi (Neuromancer) or Fantasy (Shadowrun). Also is Steampunk. (Iron Sky)
A good example is Bioshock (Steampunk). Old style (victorian era) technology, that is impossible advanced and some mystical (magic) power.
I think if you will be really strict to the letter of Cyberpunk, you would also count the Doom series to it. (Modern age technologies, demoniacal influence on mankind).
