A games company known as “LumiSoft” was created, by a sole person working from within their garage.
It was a strange garage though, as it only had 2 walls and every now and again, the Pong poster on the wall would suddenly jump into life and start moving.
Lumisoft was quite successful in its early years, the martial arts sim, “Kickin Ass” was a huge success and so was the pirate themed adventure game, “The Secret Of Monkey Pie Land”, which both made the top 10 in the charts.
But it wasn’t until they released the romance RPG game, called “Date Rape”, did they get the coveted No1 position, which brought fame and fortune for the company, who wasted no time at all in moving out of their 2 sided garage and moving into a plush 2 sided office.
But the owner and creator of LumiSoft felt lonely and so decided to hire some staff to keep him company.
Things were going well at first, with moderate success with hits like “Detention” (a school RPG game) and “Lock Down” (a prison sim) but then the cracks started to appear, in what was originally a very solid company.
Literally overnight things started to go pear shape and no matter what, the best scores LumiSoft could receive, never reached above a 6.5.
To add to their woes, their staff (who was earning as much as a premiership footballer) kept developing nits and instead of staying hard at work during the making of a game, just sat there scratching their heads.
To add insult to injury, they then had the nerve to say they were exhausted and demanded they were given time off for a vacation, which the boss had no choice but to let them have time off.
Things got even worse when the company credit card was used fraudulently, depleting what little funds were left in the LumiSoft bank account.
This was the beginning of the end for Lumisoft and things got so bad, in a desperate need to keep the company afloat, they ended up taking out a loan with interest rates set at 100%.
In a last ditch attempt to save the company from going broke, they invested 200k for a PS licence.
They started to make, in what would turn out to be their final game, a military sim called “Combat Arena” and were pinning all their hopes on this being the success they are previously been hoping for, but it wasn’t to be.
Moderate scores of an overall 7 wasnt enough to make enough money to cover the cost of making the game and also paying their staff and when the bank demanded they pay back their previous loan, LumiSoft was left with no choice but to file for Bankruptcy.
There are rumours though, that the previous director of LumiSoft had since moved back into his 2 sided garage and was starting up a new company called “Concept Games”.
Will they learn from their mistakes and become successful?
Only time will tell…
