Some late-game advice please anyone?

I’ve just completed my first successful playthrough and I thought it went well but I felt the game ended too soon because I still hadn’t built my final game engine yet and really even though I had plenty of cash throughout I didn’t really understand the Research side of things and the staff training.

It felt like the game went quite quickly so was I supposed to train staff really early or something? It took until right at the end of the game for me to train one of my staff members to Design: 700 so I only got my R&D lab after the game had ended, and whatever the Tech specialists are supposed to do I never got to see.

I’m mostly confused about the training because A) they take vital RP and time, and B) I’ve no idea how much is being added on. Later in the game I assumed that the books gave the least and the teaching courses gave more points but they all have 3 stars on so I assumed they were the same or something so I avoided staff training and only focused on that one, but even that took the whole game just to open an R&D lab, even though I could have afforded the cash decades earlier.

Can anyone please off me any tips on how to get to explore all those v. interesting R&D options and also get a tech specialist before the clock runs out on the game.

Oh and btw, what actually triggers a win? I was in Year 36 and it said the game was over so I assume it’s the lack of new platforms or something yes? Either way the years seem to fly by so fast and I am always lacking RP big time.

Are there some ways of getting RP I’m not aware of or am I supposed to pick a niche and focus on that research only instead of trying to include it all for more ambitious games

Any tips for a noob? I am desperately in need of advice - thanks all

You can get RP from R&D Lab and (maybe) Hardware Lab.

Don’t worry about rushing the game.
Just have fun.

I train after every game I make. I am training each employee for a certain specialty.

In my game right now I’m lacking RPs too.

Last game I didn’t really ever lack RP, because I trained my ‘me’ character as a research specialist (I probably would have done better hiring one!) and had him make the game reports each time. Huge boost to research during every activity, but especially making game reports.

Then, with the extra RPs, you can train even more while still keeping up on the tech you need.

If you focus, try to make sure you’re not researching EVERYTHING, just what you actually need for your focus. Like, skip dialogues and story/quest stuff for a Strategy/Simulation focus.

@JayCheetah - your username sounds familiar do I know u from another forum?

Ye basically I’m not rushing the game as much as the game is rushing me. It just seems to be over before I can get R&D lab and stuff.

I suspect one of the things I’m doing wrong is retaining the same staff throughout instead of just hiring someone with 700 D or 700 T when I need the specialist.

But I really don’t understand the training options - the only ones I use are the books because the others are a lot to spend unless I know what they do so I’ve mostly avoided them. Do they train the staff more in the same period of time?

Thanks @Jythier

Can you recommend some other good combos? I seem to be best at action/adventure or strategy/rpg games and when it comes to Casual/Simulation I have a terrible track record!!

Also, does the game score factor in any of the things you add in on the side like Level Editor, Surround Sound etc… or is it purely the 3 bars?

What games is Sound good for?

Thanks all

@Barcelonic - Hey there. I just found this game over at the Humble Bundle and I have had two nights in a row where I’ve been frantically trying to make huge game successes. Love it.

Okay, first thing’s first: Don’t feel bad about firing your staff. They’re not real people. Just spend the 1M-2M on a 700+ design/technology person and get that R&D as soon as possible. (Tip: If you get a female staffer you get an achievement!)

And here are the effects for the three training options:

If you’re ever confused about what does what, right after you select a training check out the stats box that pops up over the character. You’ll see +1 or +2 and so on corresponding to each criteria:

As far as combos, I can give you everything. It turns out that the review algorithm for the critics’ ratings are…insanely specific. Check out the Raw Data for Review Algorithm):

And this is Total Biscuit’s video on it: h ttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ytti44AUGWQ

As far as the last video is concerned, the guy does have a good point: If you don’t go through the raw data/walkthroughs on the wiki, there really is no user-friendly way of figuring out the review algorithm, the tech and design points generation algorithm, or the sales algorithm. Hell, I mulled over the wiki for a while and I still don’t understand all of it.

Other than that minor criticism this is a legitimately well-rounded game albeit a little too technical.

I give it a 7 Nice experience - Game Hero

I don’t know, there are a quite a few forums where i use this name.

You should always feel terrible when you fire staff. Keep them on. You know s/he’s got kids at home, right? Little electronic children counting on him/her to bring home the electronic bacon.

Thanks Jake
Ye I’ve been using more advanced training this time and it seems to be helping. Before I was using Books right up until the end lol

Ye I saw the algorithim has been posted but I haven’t wanted to look at it for fear of ruining the fun in the future. I want to be able to be better at this but still want to feel as though I am inventing games and not just marking percentages along a tri-coloured bar lol

Also does anybody know which forum section the devs would want me posting me game improvement suggestions?

Thanks fellow tycoons!

@jake0lawrence

But I thought this game is still being developed? On Steam it says early access still. I know its been out for ages but I thought that was just a new way of doing things?

Here you go @Barcelonic: http://forum.greenheartgames.com/category/ideas

Although let’s be real here. I highly doubt Green Heart is going to be making an expansion or a sequel in the near future. They currently do not have any plans or have even hinted at it. Frankly, I’m excited to see what they come up with next and, while I hope it’s strategy/simulation-based, I’d like to see something fresh and not recycled. On that note, I’m a fan of Chris Sawyer (Roller Coaster Tycoon) but he’s a one-trick pony. I’m much more a fan of Frontier and their non-Tycoon games anyway (see:http://elite.frontier.co.uk/).

Well, they obviously can’t release the same topic/genre combination right away or their rating will suffer. Once they hit another combination or two they can always come back and develop a sequel.
