The minute I saw projared’s one minute review of Game Dev Tycoon, I got very excited. After I bought the game and started playing it, I was a little disappointed. Here are some things I think they should add:
Difficulty settings: I found this game very difficult. It’s not the hardest game I’ve ever played, but I have never beaten it. The idea of the bank giving you money to help you is good, but usually I’ll have to pay them back while I’m in the middle of making a game to help me pay them back. Also, hardcore gamers could benefit from a hard mode, but really, I think an easy mode would help me a lot.
Free-Play Mode: You know what would be fun? A mode were you can choose one year, such as year 19, and you’re sort of stuck there forever. You have consoles like PC, Mbox 360, and GS but they are never discontinued, and no new consoles are ever released. That way, you can do all the things you want to do with your company, such as make AAA games or develop more things in the R&D lab, without the annoyance of consoles coming and going, and so you can stay at your favorite point in gaming history.
More conveyance: Oh no! Informed Gamer gave my game 3/10 and said it was boring… why? And All Games gave it a 6/10 and said it was quirky but good… what does that mean? I think the reviews should actually tell you what you did wrong or right, so instead of
Informed Gamer: 9/10 Played it for days.
Have
Informed Gamer: 9/10 The open world kept me playing this game for days. I’m glad they chose to focus on World Design.
Those are just a few ideas I had to fix the game. Here are some ideas to make the game more enjoyable:
Youtube Tab: Lets say in year 10 you made a game called “Super Pants 64” for the TES 64. The game was critically reviled. In year 19, you would go to the youtube tab and it would say “Jontron reviewed Super Pants 64. He threw the cartridge off a cliff” or “Angry Joe reviewed Super Pants 64. He said he would rather play Mindjacked.” Or maybe it could actually affect you. Like if in year 20 you made “Super Pants 2” it could say “Pewdiepie played Super Pants 2. Sales rise.” Or “Egoraptor made a short called AWESOME Pants 2. More people played the game and fans increased.”
Focus area: Lets say you’re make Super Pants: Returns. In this new story, you want to change it up by having an interactive story. But you want it too be the best it can be. So, on the second stage of development, you double click interactive story and another bar is added alongside dialogues, level design, and A.I. that is labeled interactive story. When you do this, you’re gonna want to have most of the development stage dedicated to interactive story, because if you decided to focus on something and spend no time on it at all, it will come out bad and affect your game. But if you spend time on it, it could affect your reviews. Also, there would be good combinations, such as action and multiplayer, or adventure and better dialogue.
Social media: Put your company on facebook or twitter. While making games, you can slowly increase the hype by posting about the game. Also, Kickstarter. If you’re low on money, you can start a campaign.
Stick with game: I want the ability to make series. Instead of making a sequel to the last game in the installment, I want the ability to “Add to series.” Also, you should be able to add DLC, re-release games in HD, or if you have a popular series, make a 10th anniversary addition. Also, popular games should be able to have game of the year additions.
Other Games: Other companies release games. They don’t have to all be parodies of real game, but other games to compete with would be good. Also, a top games list. Have one list for each console and genre. Have each go from all-time to this month.
Other: Release games on multiple consoles or get help from other companies in financial situations.
That’s it. Thanks for reading. If anyone from greenheartgames is reading, please consider this.
