I had the (mis)fortune to try out the game back on initial release and a few things bugged me greatly about it. Have any of the following been changed/improved since then?
Engines can’t be upgraded/updated
Companies do it all the time. Why do I have to pay for an entirely new engine when I only want to improve a single component of it like adding a new controller or a new version of graphics or sound?
The genres, oh god the genres
I remember that only very specific genre combinations worked for each console. Historically appropriate I suppose (I did hit a few good ones like making Monkey Island and Final Fantasy - and Contra? I think) Is there any way to see what genres are less than optimal without running a spreadsheet?
The sliders - Or lack thereof
Now I may be completely wrong here, but as I recall slider manipulation didn’t matter much. If you focused on a single type completely that suited the genre(s), you’d be golden. Have these been made more… manipulative?
And by whining about noone having replied to a ONE DAY OLD THREAD you’re not getting any more attention, especially not productive attention.
Nevertheless, Engine creation has not changed. If you researched a new graphics version or any other feature you cannot simply implement it into an existing engine, you still have to create a new engine for a fee.
The game also still does not tell you which genres are good to combine and which are not.
And the slider manipulation does matter. If you’re creating an RPG game you can’t just be like OH I’m gonna focus on Story/Quests and there you go 10-10-10-10 game developed. Sure, every genre has it’s main fields that are important but you don’t necessarily need to focus ONLY on those in every single stage. For example. it would be quite enough if you focus on the important fields for RPG in development stage one and two, and in three you could also allocate more time into the field “Sound” if you want your RPG to have awesome sound, and you#d still get pretty good reviews if your genre matches the topic.
Who’s Whining here? I was stating a series of questions like a civilized person and posting a sarcastic remark about how such a high number of views did not result in a single reply. And then you proceed to jump down my throat - Talk about a hostile community.
Regardless of your attitude issues, you did manage to answer all of my questions satisfactory - guess it goes back on the “shelf” for now then.
I’m curious about what your aim of this thread is. Most of the things you described as “issues” are key elements of the game. It’s not a perfect emulation, and it doesn’t try to be. Game Dev Tycoon is more focused on the company aspect of the video game industry.
If you desire to have more accurate creation of the games, I might suggest creating one yourself. It’s akin to asking if Nintendo has gotten around to solving Mario and his pesky “jump to break blocks” gameplay.
None of this is meant to be inflammatory, just some statements from somebody who is interested. What kind of game were you expecting? It stays pretty true to what was shown in trailers, at least in my experience.
