Well, I have just finished my first play through of Game Dev Tycoon and greatly enjoyed the experience. It was an intriguing game with very unique and exciting prospects. Every time a new console would come out or I get a 9+ game I found my self yelling “YES!” and procede to release my bowls in excitement. But once I had become a large company that had unlocked pretty much everything It was getting boring. I found myself creating 4-5 rated games and still make at least 50K with them. There was no chance to fail.
So I began a second play through, the first play through I had spent more time looking at the wiki to create a good game because without it I had no idea if I was going to get a 9.5 or a 2.5. I see this is an issue that the developers have addressed and don’t want to keep happening. They recognize that pretty much the only way to have success is to use the wiki. How am I supposed to know that releasing a sequel on the same engine causes a drop in game ratings, or that Action/RPG’s require more focus on an engine and less on dialogues.
I think that the reason this game is slightly loosing my intrest is that there is no skill needed to make a good game. Most of the game is luck, or if you look at the wiki, crunching numbers. There is no way to know how good your game is going to be before you release it. Even the stupidest IRL dev teams have some idea of how the game is going to perform. There needs to be a skill based way to make a good game other than calculating stats on a wiki. I’m sorry I could not come up with some insightful idea but I am sure one of you beautiful people can think of one providing on the fact you don’t think this entire post was total bullshit and a waste of five minutes of your life. Anyways, if you have an idea (or maybe even the game devs will see this) please share it. I think this is a big issue with the game that must be addressed.
My rating of this game: 8.5/10 (So much fun)
