"Sequels" should unlock sooner

First let me say I love the game, having a blast playing it.

My only major gripe is that the ability to make sequels is unlocked too late, like not until 4rd or 5th generation consoles. I immediately wanted to make a sequel for my first big hit game, and I’ve watched some Let’s Plays of GDT and everybody seems to want to do the same thing. We like to imagine ourselves creating our Final Fantasy or Ultima series, and those series started out on 1st generation consoles or earlier.

So now people just fake it by naming the game as a sequel, but then later you realize your sequels weren’t really sequels because you hadn’t unlocked that ability yet.

Here’s some video of people making “fake” sequels:

I think the ability to make sequels should be one of the first things you can Research.

I think that, although I missed the ability to make a sequel early too, it’s a good thing sequels don’t unlock too early : don’t forget that a sequel grants a sensibly lower amount of research points, as the topic/genre combination has already been used. Excessive use of sequels is bad for your future games ^^

The game really needs some way to have ‘franchises’ of games.

Sometimes i would like to have sequels sooner, but as @Kurremkarmerruk said it would hurt your research points.

Sequels shouldn’t unlock before you get a high-scoring game. I’m tempted to say that a good unlock point would be when you have two or three hit titles.

maybe there should be a pop up during the tutorial…

When a research becomes available, you have a popup screen that tells you so. I’m almost sure it’s the case when sequels unlock.

Sequels should be unlocked ASAP

i think the Camelot expansion makes the sequels appear in the beginning of the game.

You have expressed my situation precisely.
I love this game, but my company already had four titles with ‘fake sequels’-- one of them also had an RPG spin-off, and one of them had a full 3 sequels, and everything was going so well. That is, until I found out that I had to unlock sequels. It’s the Super Ninvento era! Sequels would have been around for a long time. Even if it’s a mechanically important decision to allow that exact feature at that time, it’s a huge let down to the player, especially one who has already invested heavily in (what he had believed was) a franchise.

Normally I wouldn’t care, but Game Dev is basically set up for someone like me to become heavily invested in the games made in-game, which is one of it’s strongest points: I almost feel like I’m making real games, such that I care about what my company makes.
