[ROLEPLAY] Game Dev Tycoon RP (Off-Topic)

I will probably wait for @MacDon for the answer because I don’t want to pour a lot of work into one thing without a full grasp of it.

Another thing… can a company come in with a game already made to debut their legitimacy, this would mean starting at lower funds to justify that it costed money to make the game. Such as coming in with a game but starting with %4.5 funds?

I dont know anything about game`s costs…

thats fine, i’ll wait for @MacDon

To my best knowledge, you can come into the RP with a game already made as soon as you open your doors, but there is a catch if you do: You will be unable to market it (advertise it) at all.

On the other hand, you can open the company and take about a month minimum to release the game, during which you can market it. (More info on marketing HERE and HERE.)

I was wondering about time length and stuff, as far as gaming and hardware goes it is pretty limited to this time period. Are we going to RP the 15 years to current gen?

Another thing, is this like a historically accurate timeline or can we have some tech a little earlier or in a different form, I am not talking about having 4K monitors and shit in the 90’s but I mean simple things like the first FPS or the first Discrete GPU?

If you’re clever you can get away with quite a bit. The Pixel Cube that apljee made was released in 1985 in-game and used a CD drive instead of cartridges, but was expensive as heck. I even managed to put achievements in my first game, so it just goes to show that tech isn’t everything.

Still, it might be a good idea to increase game development time to two months average and have 2 week turns, until we reach the 90s. The early game industry wasn’t so much innovative as gimmicky, and a lot of genres we take for granted today were impossible then.

Good point, for me I really want to make a company based for PC’s as in making PC hardware (when the tech is ready, obviously things like discrete GPU’s aren’t even invented yet) and PC software like an OS or some things that boost it in general, and finally make games. I don’t want to put a lot of time and effort into my company intro post so I pm’ed Liar and Mac for some questions so hopefully I can get involved soon!

Just warning people, my internet will run out for possibly a few days soon. Hopefully when I return, everything won’t be in chaos :stuck_out_tongue:
While I’m (possibly) gone, here’s a poll to vote on the next update: Update 1.2?

Founder: Jonathan Ulloa
Location: New York, New York

Funds: 5%

Company Info:
Remedy Studios is centered in an office warehouse in the Upper East Side of NYC. The founder, Jonathan Ulloa had a dream to bring PC gaming to next level. He worked all his life to gain the funds to finally gather a team and office to start working immediately. At this time, technological advancement is the main focus for the studio, bringing better technology to gaming is their way of making video games a mainstream topic.

They intend on expanding what a PC can do aswell as the software for it. Their goal is to bring PC into the world as a household product instead of a luxury.

After planting their feet in the ground as a top player in the PC field, they want to open a second department for making games. They also want to license off their hardware to console companies to also have consoles get better technology.

Another main goal of theirs is to sell PC parts separately to consumers to allow for customization, and to get PC hardware into new feets

Their goal is to advance gaming as a whole but focus is on PC

I found a good free budgeting programs to be used for our companies:

GnuCash

Okay, this is an Off-Topic personal thought. In the time of ONE RL DAY, a WHOLE month passes by (February, 1986). Should we start limiting how many days we declare our topic after another? If we RP at this rate, it forces ya to have a lot of free time to post in order to be a head of the market kind of thing (which I don’t have anymore). Personally, I only post my topic one day later (RP time). However, I think a good rate would be something like a 3-4 max. Although, I have no idea what would happen if you had an “official” day for you to post something.

Well, MacDon said that the one post is 1 week.
But, I make them as 5 days.

Could you send me a link please, or is this from a personal message (PM)? Just so I can know where and when he said this (and proof).

Hmm…
It was somewhere at the rules, but now I cant find that.

@Haxor @CaptainSnake That is the Quote from up top and limit to the amount of posts you can do. If this is what you are talking about than just scroll up and read all the stuff there, that is where I got it from.

Oh, thanks for finding that.

Ah, I see it now. But still, it isn’t very fair for those who don’t have the time to publish games fast enough. Basically, money relies on making good games and producing them fast enough (consuming RL time a LOT just to do so).

I think what we are doing is, people see what day someone else posted and just goes ahead a few days, I do not think there is a set algorithm to it. I do not know for sure so I would need @MacDon to make sure, but I do think you are allowed to move onto the next month until he posts the monthly report.

Well I think they want it to be around 2 month Development time, you can make it as long as you want though, if you want to emphasize polish and take 2 years than use that as a marketing tactic, could get a better review and cash-in. I really don’t think it is allowed to be releasing multiple games in a month.

I assumed it was fair to have a minimum development time of 1 month, except for your first game and even then, first games can not be advertised unless they are delayed by one month after the company starts. But that was just my assumption.

After further review, another option for budgeting our companies is AceMoney Lite. Unlike the “Double Entry Accounting” used by GnuCash which has a bit of a steep learning curve, Ace Money Lite provides basic features and can go back to 1985 just like GnuCash to simplify the dating process.

Keep in mind that I will continue using GnuCash, meaning files won’t be compatible should we ever have reason to exchange them. If you want assistance with GnuCash, I can probably help. It has a full list of features, but as I said has a steep learning curve and will likely take you about a day to figure out by looking at the tutorials.

And if anyone’s wondering, I wasn’t the first RPer in this topic to suggest this kind of thing. See Drakiren’s post about “You Need A Budget” which costs 50 dollars.
