[ROLEPLAY] Game Dev Tycoon RP (Off-Topic)

Welcome to Game Dev Tycoon RP 1.1!

I’m your GM, MacDon, essentially I am the market, the customers, the trends, the public etc.
To maintain neutrality and to make for a fairer RP, I will not own any companies.

How does the RP/GM work?

To make for a challenging and unpredictable game, I will use a number of factors to determine how well your game/company/console does. Since, as I mentioned before, I’m not directly in the RP, I shouldn’t be biased. In this way it’s almost like a board game or even a actual video game, adding a competitive edge. You could think of me as the game system/AI/programming itself, behind the scenes deciding your success/failure in all those strategy/simulation games.

Enough about the GM, though.

What can you do to play?

Introduce yourself:
State your company name and an optional logo here, in the off-topic thread.

Pick a platform:
Decide your platform of choice for your first game, here

Get your game’s score:
Send a copy of your game to get reviewed and determine how good it is. Learn how here:

Choose a marketing campaign size:
Prices/Descriptions here

Decide how you want to market it:
Tips here. If you don’t want to concern yourself with this, just read the ‘hiring other companies’ section.

Then, after sending that to the GM. Sit back and wait (optional) until the end of month sale/reviews are published and see how well your game did.

Interaction:

Remember that no company is an island. Interact with other companies for better or worse. Use them in you strategies for total game industry domination. If it’s possible in real life, don’t be afraid to try it.

To see who is who in the RP: Company List

Tech:

Tech must be appropriate for its time Don’t have HD in the 80s for example. If you want to innovate and the tech isn’t too far away, remember to jack up the price suitably. Game concepts are affected by limitations of tech.

Updates:

The RP system/rules will be updated as you play. This will not be done without players being warned, so don’t worry. The system will be constantly trying to improve. You can help shape it, however! Through the polls and other ways, the players’ opinions matter. Don’t be afraid to suggest feedback! Don’t like the current production system? Make a suggestion on how to improve it or state what is wrong with it.

Money!

Financial security is determined by %.
Everyone starts at 5%.
Bankruptcy must be declared at 0% and your assets will be auctioned off.
The control of your former company is determined by the new owner/s.

Each post is a week

Usual Rules Apply:

  • No Spamming
  • No Directly changing other people’s stuff
  • No ridiculous numbers
  • Use off-topic/on-topic for intended purposes
  • If off-topic is necessary in on-topic, use OT: or Off-topic:
  • Be friendly and welcoming to everyone
  • International date system only: D/M/Y
  • Unacceptable immature behaviour is to be avoided or posts will be deleted.
  • Maximum of three posts allowed to be posted in a row for in-game stuff
  • No obvious rip-offs/real names please.

**Now that all the boring (but necessary) stuff is out of the way, go to the On-Topic Thread and begin your game dev empire! **

Upcoming Updates: Company List (including budgets!) and Games Lists (sorted by genres)

you should really just join v6 because I told charlie that I’d get people to stop making more GDRP threads because there’s like 12 already

I’ve lost interest in GDT RP. The first two threads I posted in went crazy and died off (why make Minecraft in the '70s? That doesn’t even make sense!) and the third I attempted to be a part of didn’t want to hear about my pony games. Meh.

I was hoping that the no obvious rip-offs would stop that kind of crazyness.

// I was just kidding about the wrath of the ponies.

We have no problem with you starting a new RP thread based on these rules.

I would like to add the rules based on what i have noted from the other threads;
Be friendly and welcoming to everyone.
Do not argue about date format, only America uses M/D/Y. Do not force other people to conform.
Unacceptable immature behaviour is to be avoided or we will delete your posts.

For a harmonious thread i would think its very important not to monopolise the thread by posting in tandem while others are away.

I see.

Added those rules.

I guess if no one else is going to sign up, I’ll hop in.

Company name is Horse-Drawn Games. Here’s my logo.

Console is the Gamewagon. I don’t have a picture of it.

Specs:

  • 2 kB RAM
  • 16 kB Video RAM
  • 256x192 resolution
  • 32 sprites
  • 16 colors
  • 4-channel mono sound
  • 3 sound generators with 4 octaves each
  • 1 white noise generator
  • Output: RF coaxial, or DIN composite
  • 2 controller ports
  • 1 keyboard port*
  • 1 printer port*
  • 1 cartridge port
  • 1 floppy drive

*Not all games support keyboards or printers.

Description:

Gamewagon games are stored on cartridges. The console supports save games, but lacks a hard drive and save data cannot be written to cartridge ROM. Instead, save data is stored on a 3.5-inch (90 mm) floppy diskette.

The Gamewagon is backwards-compatible with most of Horse-Drawn Games’ older PC titles, including Tales From Happy Valley (the base game and all adventure packs). Inserting a compatible diskette into the floppy drive while there is no game cartridge inserted allows the user to play interactive fiction on the Gamewagon. This requires a keyboard. Only titles released or re-released on 3.5 inch diskettes are compatible.

Pricing:

The Gamewagon comes in three different standard editions; A, B, and C.

Gamewagon-A:

  • $350 USD
  • Wood-paneled casing with sterling silver accents
  • 2 wood-paneled controllers with sterling silver accents
  • 1 copy of Astrid’s Pony Tales
  • 1 copy of Gamewagon: Play!
  • 2 400 kB floppy diskettes
  • 1 power adapter
  • 1 RF cable
  • 1 DIN cable

Gamewagon-B:

  • $250
  • Wood-paneled casing with aluminum accents
  • 1 wood-paneled controller with aluminum accents
  • 1 copy of Astrid’s Pony Tales
  • 1 copy of Gamewagon: Play!
  • 1 400 kB floppy diskette
  • 1 power adapter
  • 1 RF cable (DIN sold separately)

Gamewagon-C:

  • $175
  • Plastic casing available in 2 colors; beige or wood-grain
  • 1 standard plastic controller
  • 1 copy of Gamewagon: Play!
  • 1 400 kB floppy diskette
  • 1 power adapter
  • 1 RF cable (DIN sold separately)
  • Special editions of the Gamewagon are based on the Gamewagon-C

Gamewagon: Play! is not available by retail. It is a collection of 8 simple games on one cartridge, and is shipped with all Gamewagons.

Launch Titles:

  • Gamewagon: Play! (uncertain, let’s just go with rhythm/casual, suitable for all audiences)
  • Astrid’s Pony Tales (fantasy/RPG, suitable for all audiences)
  • Higurashi (ninja/action, suitable for all audiences but marketed to a mature audience)
  • Voidrunner (sci-fi/action, suitable for all audiences)

Well… I think I will be the second to sign up then!
I tried to do it in the style of Akamadoushi so it wouldn’t be hard to see the differences.

This console has no backwards comaptibility with any games and will only be able to play games made for the console. Instead of touching the button many times for inserting a save name, for example, this console is compatible with a maximum of one keyboard which will be great for the hardcore pc-gamers.

Looks like we have enough people to me?

Just some notes:

  1. 32-bit is one/two generations away.
  2. CD drive weren’t common in game consoles until early 90s and even then, they’d jack up the price by 100s of dollars as a peripheral alone.
  3. Local multiplayer was fairly limited at the time.
  4. Remember for Betas that there is no “external” connections to update it.
  5. Could be wrong, but is the resolution too high for the time?

You’ll either have to eliminate features or jack up the price I’m afraid.

Will I rename this to GDT RP V7 or something more creative?
(This particular thread will be off topic)

If this is the offtopic thread I would say you just call it Game Dev Tycoon RP (Off-Topic) because the other thread is dead, so just name it that and then make the um… On-Topic Thread?

Wait… that’s not okay for a 1985 console!

At first,
we already have 3 appropriate sign-ups so you’re a bit too late.

At second,
I need three console owners to start it off.

A computer is not a console and therefore doesn’t count :stuck_out_tongue:

So… how is it going?

Did you not read my previous post?[quote=“LineLiar, post:19, topic:8585”]
