So on my first playthrough i am about 40 years in. I dont want to lose all that hard work 
but if i start a new game i am worried it will save over my current play though. Will it or will it create a new save slot?

You have 3 save slots. Just make sure to save that current session. If you’re extremely paranoid you could just save your game files somewhere else and try it.
