OpenGL over DirectX

(Can only be viewed in MS Word 2010 and up or LibreOffice and Apache OpenOffice any version.)

Do not start a flame war in this thread! If you have civilized opinions, please post them. I will not reply personally unless its a justifiable question which is about DirectX or OpenGL.

what is that

What is that

Just Duck “OpenGL” or “DirectX” :smile:

@Haxor
@LineLiar

What is that

DuckDuckGo.

You wanna know why? Because OpenOffice, and all these other free word programs, are free alternatives of word. Why should Microsoft put work into their program, just to open their free alternatives filetype?

Also, upload it to google docs or something. No one here wants to download a different program just to read you rant how a different API is better than another.

In the document I dont rant about how OpenGL is better! I address the different API’s and find a conclusion.

Also, LibreOffice and OpenOffice both support the Word .doc and .docx formats so they must be idiots. They are actually using another format than their own. Idiots.

Here’s the conclusion; Money. DirectX has a much bigger user base. Game developers want money, so they go to the platform that has the most users. More users = more possible profit.

Anyways, right now, Directx is slightly better at 3d rendering than opengl, it uses less resources, also not as good drivers. DirectX also handles audio, graphics, and input. While opengl does not.

Once DirectX12 comes out, nothing will touch it for a good bit.

They support it because they are alternatives. Why should Word support a format only used by the free alternatives? And how are they idiots? By not losing users to free alternatives? That’s like calling steam stupid for not giving out half of their games for free? Companies are in the business’s to make money, not lose it.

Huh?

@Stian There are young people on the forums, please keep the language down

@KizzaGaming I wouldn’t exactly say calling someone a twat is bad language :stuck_out_tongue:

@Killertoad I wont answer to all of those, because I dont want to argue. I want a good and civilized discussion :slight_smile: First of all, what I said in my post about using others formats was because you said that about Word/Microsoft. I have nothing against DirectX, but I was talking about Direct3D/2D and the rendering, not the input and stuff. Have you seen Valve’s tests of Half Life 2 on OpenGL vs DirectX? OpenGL won on both Windows Linux. But people call whats happened with DirectX “the vicious cycle”. They gained a marketshare boost at some point, (probably at Windows 7 launch) and then a lot of people switched. Nvidia/AMD then got fewer bug reports about their OpenGL drivers. Thus, more people switched to DirectX because of its increased driver support. And thus it continued.

Also, its worth mentioning WebGL. That is OpenGL and there is no “WebX” :stuck_out_tongue: You can run it emulated in DirectX, but its still OpenGL. Thanks for not screaming, I really want to have a good discussion with smiles and not an explosive barrel throwing competition.

I don’t know what MS Word version you are using, but Word 2013 (Office 365) can view and save .odt format.

I dont use Word, but it didn’t work in 2007. (Last version I ever used)

I wish video cards had better support for OpenGL its a great API.

Yeah :smiley: I’ve made several programs using OpenGL and I find it a lot less restricting too. With OpenGL you have an incredible number of third party libraries ready to use.
