what I don’t like is your topic is similar too is almost never correct.
Those are the number of notifications you have, meaning someone replied to you somewhere, replies to your topics, mentions of your name, private messages. If you find and view the one which the 1 refers to, it will go away.

And green means it is a private message. Regular reply notification numbers are blue.
I should add that we’re doing some work this week to improve private messaging, making PM notifications stick until you’ve read the PM is was just the first step.
