Non-Steam, Non-Windows 8 Version 1.4.2

Am I being dense or something?

So I clicked the DL link in my original order email from Fast Spring, and it took me to a download of GameDevTycoon-1.4.2. Won’t this be exactly the same as the Steam version? I figured if it’s the same version then I can get started without having to wait for the Steam Key to come through…right?

Ohh, and if so: will saves from this version be compatible with the Steam version?

Game Dev Tycoon comes in 3 main flavours:

  • ModernUI edition (from the Windows Store) for Windows 8 and Windows 8 RT
  • Desktop edition (from the GHG Store / FastSpring) for Windows, Mac, and Linux
  • Steam edition (from Steam, natch), for Windows and Mac (Linux coming soon)

The different editions are the same game at the core. The differences are primarily tied to how and where the game is installed. Therefore, v1.4.2 is the same game regardless of platform.

Each edition can be installed side-by-side and saves do not automatically transfer. However, the saves are compatible and can be copied manually between the different editions.

Excellent, thanks EvoGamer that was very informative and helpful.

Well since I’m not too fussed about having it on Steam, I’m happy to just get stuck in to the new content sooner! I’ll boot up the standalone download first, and then just wait for the Key to come through in due course. Especially good news since the saves can be transferred!
