I’m a little annoyed at Greenheart Games’ way of trolling pirates. First of all, my friend is a pirate, and I’ve noticed that when pirates like the game a lot, they decide to support the devs and buy it. Trolling them only makes them mad and makes them want to trash talk them and not show any support. They’ll tell their friends to pirate it just to annoy the devs. This was my friend’s experience. Personally, I love the game, but the pirate thing really annoys me.
While we welcome your feedback please note that I edited your post to remove the expletives.
I’m sure your “friend” is quite a good pirate, but I disagree with your views. Pirates typically don’t buy games that they pirated because they got it for free. They have less incentive to purchase the game. Game demos are specifically created to try games before you buy them and if you don’t have the money then you need to deal with the fact that it’s out of your reach right now. I know a few pirates and if left unattended they don’t buy jack. I have to badger them constantly until they finally break down and buy a copy if only to shut me up. I believe Greenheart did the right thing, it’s their intellectual property and they should do whatever they please with it. They trust the community by offering DRM free copies, and yet people like your friend take advantage of them and then wonder why they haven’t made a sequel. It’s because funding comes from copies sold and Indie Devs have little to work with from the start.
It is even less acceptable to pirate indie games as these are people that sometimes pour their entire life savings into what they believe in and at times you could literally be taking food out of their mouths. (Watch the documentary Indie Game). Nobody should feel bad for an annoyed pirate in the same way you shouldn’t feel bad for an annoyed thief. They don’t show support to begin with so I’m afraid your “no longer show support” comment is null. Nice Jolly Roger by the way.
OK I can admit I did pirate this game when I first found out about this game, I only did it as a test to see how the anti-piracy measure worked and I still supported the company bcuz they did such a good job on the game. If your friend, LOLrusboy, doesn’t like to support people who make these games for a living so they can pay their bills and continue with their career then I don’t think your friend is a very good person, much less a true gamer. I will forever support video game companies because they put so much of their time in creating something that they love as well as what someone like me loves to do in my free time. Green Heart Games creates games like Game Dev Tycoon for a career and one hell of a paycheck that we can only dream about making. I’m not being mean but I’m telling you this, Games are meant to be bought NOT PIRATED for ILLEGAL reasons.
Why should they pirate GDT in the first place? It has a demo, isn’t to expensive and is made by indie devs!
Legally speaking, the game downloads on the filesharing website Green Heart Games uploaded a copy of this game to themselves cannot be considered pirating because by doing so they offered their intellectual property to the public. Even more so considering the fact that they designed a version of the game specifically to publish it for everyone on that website. Therefor they have no reason whatsoever to be upset about the people downloading this copy. I can however understand that they are upset that some legit copies have found their way onto some filesharing websites. On a side note, I think that Indie Developers should be heavily supported because competition is good for business. Makes those big players like EA, DICE and such work for their money again should a indie dev team rise up from the depths.
