Modding and mods

cool @TestSubject0, i can’t wait for it

@TestSubject0 That’s amazing! I would love to use it, if you can make that!

Very nice, hope you will get it done soon.

I think they should make modding extremeley easy or even release the SDK so they can just walk away from this game and start greater projects. Not saying that they should but the popularity can sky rocket and the amount of content would be insane! I know if this modding capability is every implemented I will be doing maaaany things.

Can you please message me when that is done because I would love to mod game dev tycoon.

Hello anyone else please?

ok, how do you make mods with the special software.

You can’t, yet.
I’ll work on getting the patch system working and then I’ll add hooks to actually add things.
I just uploaded this to show my progress.

I have temporarily hidden your descriptive post. Please allow us some time to review it. We should have an answer by the middle of next week.

Please do not take this personally, we have been on the fence about modding, because of the reverse engineering policy. Patrick and Daniel are currently at the PAX Melbourne convention and are back Monday - ish.

Okay, I didn’t think it was considered reverse engineering as the code is in plaintext ready to be unzipped.
But if they mind I’ll stop.

Patrick said to me something like, that using an unzipped / extracted version of the GDT package includes reverse engineering. I do not know if it is, but to make the code beautiful / readable is a modification at least.

The game file you mentioned needs an user license like http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc-sa/3.0 at minimum to make modifications / extensions possible even if it is in plain text. And maybe the game needs an extension to make a modificated game source useable.

Okay, I’ll stop then.

Dude you are my hero for doing what your doing. This game needs modding! it would be so amazing, please carry on.

I want to, but apparently it violates the T&C of Game Dev Tycoon. :frowning:

well damn :frowning: I hope when it comes out on steam they will make modding support for the steam workshop. It seems like the perfect game for that.

Yeah, the Steam Workshop’s concept would be great for Game Dev Tycoon.
However I’ve never had much success using Steam Workshop with Portal 2 or Garry’s Mod 13.

Steam Workshop in my opinion wouldn’t work, what you gonna create more maps for GDT to be used on or something?

Just a fact:
Maps aren’t everything Steam Workshop can do. Well, supposedly can do. Very rarely you’ll be able to download a prop into Garry’s Mod, and if they were to incorporate Steam Workshop into GDT, very rarely you would be able to download a new genre into Game Dev Tycoon.

The game wasn’t designed with modding in mind and I don’t think that ‘hacking’ the current source code is a great way to allow modding. That sort of hacking is also against our EULA. We don’t allow reverse-engineering or altering the core source code of the game in such a way and I don’t think that any such mods would be very user friendly, especially when the Steam release is concerned. I think offering a cleaner modding API (maybe by working together with key community members) and starting a dialogue of what mod ideas are popular would be a better way do go towards a moddable game.

At the moment we are busy with the Steam release but once that is settled we will put our attention back to community-related activities such as localizations and potential mods.

Thanks for the update Pat.
