Currently, I’m taking a class on Piracy and have decided to concentrate my final project on modern e-piracy. I’m basically arguing that internet piracy has the potential to disrupt profits but it can also be used to promote a product. I want to use this game as an example of this (i.e. with it’s modified pirated version gathering lots of media attention) but am having trouble finding how many copies the game has actually sold.
My question is, does anyone know how many copies Greenheart Games sold of Game Dev Tycoon? I’d love to have a month-by-month breakdown, but overall sales would be fine too.
ha I actually found that article already, it gives a cool perspective on the initial players, but doesn’t give the total sales, sadly. Maybe, someone could someone maybe PM Patrick or Daniel for me?
This is just a guess from some research that I did. This does not take in effect of development cost etc.
This may not be completely accurate this is a rough estimate. There may not have been game copy’s that were running at this time either so you need to take that into effect also.
Lets say that the 3104 pirates all had the $10 version of the game so if it was that way the pirates would have stole $31,040
from Greenheart Games.
Lets also look at the 214 legitimate copy’s of the game that were out we are also going to guess that all of these copy’s were not from the Windows store. So the 214 copy’s would add up to $2140
This is just a rough estimate only Patrick and Daniel know how much money they made from the game and how much money it took to develop it. I would also recommend if you do not live in the US you will need to convert this to the currency that your country uses.
I don’t think that there is any question that piracy has already disrupted this industry for years and will continue to be a force for change (example: trend towards freemium games or even early access). To just say it has the potential is simply incorrect. In our case I don’t think that it would be right to say that ‘piracy’ promoted our product. It was the story about the ridiculous reality of piracy that caught the media attention and inspired people. I think we were very lucky with that.
Good luck with your paper and I hope the above link gives you some insights.
