How do you manage your sequels?

This is not a call for help, but i just wanted to know your method to create sequels. It’s about three questions i have in mind:

  1. For which games do you do sequels?

I used to make for every game get a rating above 9, with good marketing and a trip to the G3, it usually score a good hype. But maybe it’s not the best measure to create sequels. Maybe the fanbase of the game, or it sales is more important than the rating.

  1. How do you manage to not “kill a licence”? (By making the sequel less appreciated/sold than the prequel) Did you keep creating sequels to a game that doesn’t match his predecessor?

I usually try to make the sequel with a new engine, with new features that will feat (in my opinion) the genre. But with late game big features, i’m obligated to leave smaller features that were in the prequel. And as far as i know, it seems to kill the game. So i leave the franchise to try something else.

  1. Has someone tried to make a sequel of a game that already have one? (You have a game that is good rated and sold a lot, make a sh*tty sequel, then remake a sequel to the previous version) Does it work?

I never tried myself because it seems really illogical and could be a weak spot in the game mechanics if it worked.

P.S.: Sorry for my clunky english, it’s not my mother tongue. So if you find anything to improve/correct it, please let me know.

I generally just create sequels to everything i made no matter the score including my very 1st game texbased on PC made in garage.
I keep the rule of 5 years of gap, and new engine.
I start sequels once i have 100k funbase.
I also factor the popularity of consoles at the moment. When its Playsystem time sequel all action i ever made. When jumps dreamvast go with adventures. Wen i run out of others, but the PC is up go with my strategic and simulators.
The review seems to be mostly ok 8+, the incom is good enought and the funbase increase fast enought althoug sometimes not as much as games with 9+.

As for killing the line, as long as its 5 years gap and new engine, i dont mind how good previous game was.

The effect is generally good at the end, 1.5T cash, 4M funbase and stuff. But i cant say which element is deciding.
