Hey everyone. I’m relatively new to this forum, and so this is me introducing myself (although, that isn’t the point of this post.)
So, ok, not totally introducing myself, but hey! Now you know what my user name is. So anyway, I found out about Game Dev Tycoon a couple weeks ago through the Let’s Play for it by one of my favorite youtubers (Ryan Turner/The Solar Gamer.) When I found out about it, I started looking for a free copy right away. I found one, and I pirated the game. I loved, it, and I had loads of fun starting the game off.
But then a thought occurred to me. How many other people are doing this? So I looked it up online and find that (As many of you probably already know) over 90 percent of those who had the game, pirated it. My heart (heh heh) broke for these Greenheart Games guys. They made a small game, something they’d wanna play, and barely anyone is even willing to spare $8 for it. I also started feeling guilty. “I’m one of those guys,” I thought. "I’m depriving these two great guys of money I can spare. Money I don’t need, and they do."
The next day, I bought the game. I also emailed some of my favorite youtubers. Yes, I’m a ware they probably didn’t read it, but it was worth a try. I asked them to encourage their viewers watching their LPs for GDT to BUY the game, not pirate it.
Now, those of you reading this who DID buy the game, kudos to you. I want to start a campaign, right here on Greenheart forums, to break down the piracy. Email your favorite LPers. Ask them to spread the word about this game and ask their viewers to BUY the game, not pirate it. If we can get enough people involved, they’ll have to notice those emails/comments/Facebook messages eventually! Then the Klugs can put some bread in their baskets. So, if you read this far, please join me in this crusade. And also, if you did read this far, sweet! I guess I’m not too boring! But anyway, thanks if you’re with me. I’ll be signing off now. Adios!
Without sounding like the proverbial sanctimonious , you’re saying I should get kudos for paying for a game someone else created?
I bought it. I didn’t even consider pirating it. My reward is my conscience, my morality and my belief in paying for something I receive. I do not need your praise.
With the greatest of respect, THIS is what is wrong these days. We shouldn’t need to be praised for doing the “right” thing and it should not be a motivating factor. We should be slapped for doing the wrong thing. Obviously not enough of that happening is there?
Kudos for coughing up the story but seriously man, we’re going about this piracy issue way wrong if we have to single out the people doing it the way it is supposed to be done…
Buying the game is great, but if you want to go out of your way to help these guys, you can do more than just buy the game. Reporting bugs with extensive and relevant system and screen shot information can help them with bug fixing. Promoting the game to your friends and family and encouraging them to buy their own copies helps as well. Spreading it via genuine word of mouth is helpful too. These guys don’t have an advertising budget to speak of, so word-of-mouth is pretty much the only way to expose new people to it.
Trust me, I’ve told anyone who would be interested. But right now the Klug’s biggest problem is the piracy, and that’s the thing I’m shooting to help with right now. If we who have bought the game legitimately all spread the word about this, I’m sure we can help these guys. And also, should I locate any bugs, you can be assured, I will report them. I will do all that I can in order to support the Klugs.
No offence, but if you didn’t want my praise, you didn’t have to make me seem like a for giving it. I can see where your coming from, but come on.
Why shouldn’t we be praised for doing the right thing? Is that not what praise is for?
Unfortunately, that is what we have to do. Sadly, we do need to single out the people who bought the game, because there’s enough that we actually can single them out individually. 93.6% on a small game. That’s a helluva lot more people that pirate than people who buy it. We who DID buy it need to come to together and make sure that other people who would instead pirate the game, don’t. I know that’s not necessarily in our power, but if we can tell other people about the game without them pirating it, maybe we can even out the numbers a bit.
@beriothen - sorry mate, very hard to get a point across using written words.
My point is that we are becoming increasingly tolerant towards piracy to the point where we have preference for praise doing the right thing (which we should be doing “normally”) and do very little against the wrong thing apart from shrug and say “get used to it”.
It’s the disparity I am trying to highlight. This acceptance is the bit that irks me.
Just wanted to say thanks for changing your mind and for buying our game (and of course for coming to our forum and sharing your story). That someone changes their attitude towards piracy is very encouraging. Thank you!
It’s also nice that you want to convert others but I guess that everyone has to come to their own conclusions. Putting pirates (especially friends) on the spot and asking them to consider purchasing a game, is certainly one way to do it. I think, as others have already said as well, that the acceptance of piracy by the gaming community at large is a big issue.
