Based on the responses in this thread (and what gameplay I’ve gone through), it seems that once you unlock 3D graphics you should completely ignore 2D as an option. This doesn’t seem to make much sense; after all, you can’t really do 3D on the real-world counterpart to the “gameling”, but in GDT that doesn’t matter, it’s a non-choice because choosing only 3D is the only logical choice to make. So I propose that the different graphics options have various synergies with different consoles (ie: any 3D + gameling = bad, 2Dv3 + gameling = less efficient than using 2Dv2 (you can only do so much with a monochrome-esque screen, after all), etc).

I’ve always imagined overteching a console (by producing a game of higher technology than it can support) involves turning off a lot of engine features and heavily optimizes what remains. The result being better than using the lower tech graphics, but not as good as using a higher tech console.
That’s just what I imagine, though. I think in the game the primary effect of overteching is that it penalizes AAA games.
