Games You Might Not Have Tried

Cheers for the heads-up on the similarly named games. Still love that Creatures C64 is actually an acronmym for the games aim (Clyde Raddcliffe Exterminates All the Unfriendly Earth Ridden Slime).

Anyway. Links for the C64 games!

Creatures

Creatures 2

And I seem to be limited to the number of links, so if you search Ricochet on lemon64 you can see that too.

Uplink is a great Indie game by Introversion.

Evil Genius is another brilliant strategy game and can be bought off GoG.com for about $5.99 so its a bargain

The Cave is a new title by Double Fine and is really nicely done.

Those are a few I really enjoy that people sometimes have missed.

Anything by Introversion is worth playing: Uplink, Darwinia, Defcon, Multiwinia, & Prison Architect.

Indeed. Imagine the silliest of Bond villains (or perhaps Dr Evil?) and their secret volcano basesā€¦ then you get to play as such a villain and build your own base. Also available on Steam

Another hidden gem of a game is an early 3D flight sim called Corn Cob 3D. Name another game where you can fly your biplane against an alien force, jump out and fly the plane by remote control whilst still parachuting, and run yourself over trying the land the planeā€¦ go on, I dare you to try.

Wow, I am overwhelmed by all the games you guys have brought to the discussion. Iā€™m definitely going to add some of these to my library. I will post my third list soon.

Throne of the Stars - a web game that blends roleplaying and strategy. Take the role of a Baron of a Noble House fighting for supremacy in the Imperium of the Twelve Worlds. Think Dark Agesā€¦ in Space! Character driven, persistent online play. Its also FREE.

Bastion - Just, awesome. An amazing game that everybody should play. Iā€™ve yet to mean someone who downright dislikes this game, though some dislike the narrator aspect.

Dustforce - Great ā€˜pick-up and playā€™ style game. Has an extremely high level cap, with highscores for beating levels, some of which are extremely challenging. Itā€™s very good for working on your reaction times. I know a lot of pro-gamers play this to get their reactions up to speed before playing in tournaments and such.

FTL (Faster Than Light) - Awesome game. You run a spaceship and travel through space aiming to defeat an alien enemy. The game can be very difficult at times, and isnā€™t too forgiving. It has great aspects and is really addicting though. A lot of re-playability too.

Trine 1 and 2 - Great games, definitely more fun to play co-op. Theyā€™re puzzle-platformer type games. You have 3 characters, a wizard, knight and an archer and each has different abilities and will help you through the puzzles in various ways. You can inter-change between the characters at the push of a button.

I suck at describing games, but hopefully someone at least takes a look into one of these. Theyā€™re not exactly the smallest games, but are some great indie games which deserve some love!

Just to add to Dannyā€™s post,Bit.Trip Runner is a great game and extremely addicting. I got XCOM with the Bioshock Infinite deal and that game is great too. I hadnā€™t heard of the series before before this installation but itā€™s a very good mix between turn-based strategy and management.

Tropico is a great city-sim and strategy game. You can spend hours upon hours building up your cities and then wondering where time went. It also doesnā€™t take itself too seriously and has some great events and twists.

Recettear was actually a suggestion by someone else, I believe on Reddit, while looking into this game. I ended up buying both of them but Iā€™ve yet to play it yet as Iā€™ve been playing Game Dev Tycoon! I hope itā€™ll be just as good.

Hello everyone. I have to give a shoutout to Star Command! It was just released today and is one of the greatest ios games I have ever played, you should look if youā€™ve always wanted to play a game which is a mix of Game Dev Story and Star Trek with some awesome dialog paths in there.

Starbase Orion for IOS is basically Master of Orion on IOS and is awesome for anyone who was a MOO fan.

Thanks for the suggestion. If it is anything like Masters Of Orion I will be purchasing right now.

Hello everyone in an effort to make the thread more accessible I have been going back and adding in links to the games as well as change some formatting issues. In the future if you can please add the links before posting, but if you canā€™t donā€™t worry about it.

Paradox Games, if you like strategic games, that make you think and stuff like that, you have to try that company. I bought a steam promotion last year, where I got most of their games for U$S 70, didnā€™t have enough time to play them all, but they are great, and there are not many companies doing those kind of games.

My favorite in-development indie title right now is Kerbal Space Program. Build rockets from modular components, see them explode fantastically, build them better, learn to send little green men into space, get motivated to learn actual astronautics and stuff. What fantastic fun.

If weā€™re talking old games as wellā€¦oh, so many past favorites. I keep a mental list of games that, in my eyes, most desperately need sequels/remakes/reboots but donā€™t seem to have any hope of getting them. Off the top of my head, these would include Imperialism 1 and 2, Seven Cities of Gold, M.U.L.E., and Motor City.

Really nice topic

Although some games i wanted to note are already posted i still have one.
This one is quite popular in the indie scene but it still could be that this one is unknown to some of you.
Monaco a very cool innovative and fun topdown stealth game it is on steam right now

Puzzle Quest - Really addictive ā€œversusā€ puzzle game where you choose a character class, fight puzzle battles against various people and monsters. Your character levels up, gets spells to use in the battles, buys equipment, creates a stronghold, and all sort of cool stuff like that. (Fantasy - Strategy-RPG - PC - Everyone)

Terraria - Relatively famous at this point, but itā€™s a Metroid-like 2D sandbox game where you explore randomly generated, destructible world with various zones that contain different resources, special items, and enemies. (Fantasy - Action - PC - Everyone)

Kingā€™s Bounty: The Legend - like the Heroes of Might and Magic series I think, though I never played those. (Fantasy - Strategy-RPG - PC - Everyone)

Crusader Kings 2 - Dynastic ruler strategy game currently set from 1066 to 1400 or so. Makes you understand why people in those days were always murdering their own family. A coming expansion will bring the start date to 867 for some Viking action. Surprisingly was in the running for Kotakuā€™s game of the year. Paradox really outdid themselves with this one, as it has beautiful graphics, no bugs, deep and engrossing gameplay. Iā€™ve more been a fan of the time period in Europa Universalis (1400 - 1800), so also really looking forward to EU4 which uses the CK2 engine. (Medieval - Simulation-Strategy - PC - Mature)

Half Minute Hero - Comedic JRPG where you have exactly 30 seconds before the villain destroys the world. Fortunately you have a god helping you who lets you freeze time in town, and rewind time if you can pay her enough money. Has other game modes that are slightly less entertaining but cool as well. Originally for PSP, but itā€™s on many platforms now including PC. (Fantasy/Comedy - RPG - Multiplatform - Everyone)

Highly recommend these mentioned by other people:
Recettear
FTL
Orcs Must Die! 1 (none of my friends own it, and 2 is balanced for co-cop)
EV Nova (the criticism of the plot is valid, but people like me who havenā€™t played the originals would have trouble with their graphics).

Mount & Blade series
Especially Mount & Blade: Warband and Mount & Blade: Warband Napoleonic Wars. Of the last one i got some sort of letā€™s play for 1 episode, itā€™s dutch though.

Im suprised nobody has mentioned LIMBO yet, fantastic little indie puzzle solving game with a really unique art style, can be quite tough at times, but the checkpoints are after every single little puzzle. There is a demo available on Steam if you want to try it first.

Also I have to give a should out to Super Hexagon as a friend of mine (and team member with me for PCSX2) did the port to android. Highly highly frustrating music game, my average go lasts about 13 seconds, but itā€™s also extremely fun at the same time!

Thereā€™s another game called Game Dev Tycoon Iā€™ve been hearing some good stuff about too that should probably be checked out  Only kidding, loving every minute of it!

Haha, I was going to suggest Recettear, but everyone else beat me to it! Iā€™m going to go ahead and also recommend a game by the same company

Fortune Summoner: A side scrolling Fantasy Adventure/Action game by the makers of Recettear. It boasts cute characters once more and this time features some platforming and fantasy fighting action. The main heroine is on a hunt for magical powers and enlists the powers of her friends (which can be swapped around to access different magical abilities). The price point is $20 on Steam, though with Steam, youā€™re guaranteed a sale eventually.

Beat Hazard: Space shooter reminiscent of asteroids, but with about 1000% more epileptic seizure causing flashes (seriously, do not play this game if prone to epiliptic seizures, this will do it). Barring that, this is a very fun space shooter that takes your music (or whatever audio you want to use) and makes a level out of it. The ultra version includes upgrades to give more weapons to your ship to help you last through those long songs (I played through AMV Hell 3, 2 hours of constantly changing momentum due to different songs and volume).

Croixleur: This place really made me think of them because they are in a similar boat with Game Dev Tycoon. Cheap price, simple game premise, indie, and currently on Steam Greenlight. It is a hack and slash game that is similar to the horde modes of other games. You control the swordwoman Luc as she goes through a ritual trial by battling waves of monsters. Throughout the dungeon, you collect swords, each with their own unique special attack that you can chain together with each other to create devestating combos (you can carry a max of 4 swords at a time, but there are about 12 in the game). The game also sports a survival mode that really puts your skills to the test.

Shira Oka: Second Chances: Okay this is a much older game than some of the other stuff Iā€™m mentioning, but it isnā€™t well known, and a fun game for those of you who like Visual Novel style games. Shira Oka is your usual high school romance visual novel game about finding the love of your lifeā€¦but with time travel. Youā€™re sent back in time by an angel because you ended up lonely and a bum all grown up. So now youā€™re going to change your fate. As you progress through the school year (in which you must maintain your grades while dating various girls) youā€™ll go through random events and make choices. Once your game ends though, it just reverts. Any ending causes you to be returned back to the start of the school year due to the angelā€™s powers, but you retain memories and they can influence your game, which gives it interesting replayability. The game is kinda long and tedious though, unlike other VNs.

Poker Night 2 and itā€™s predecessor, Poker Night at the Inventory: Okay, this is NOT an indie game, but it might not be as well known as I would like. Poker Night is what happens when you take 4-5 characters from different video games/tv shows/web series and put them in a room together to play Texas Hold em. Hilarity ensues. The real gameplay isnā€™t at all about winning card games, but more about seeing the funny interactions between the characters. Both games are $5 each on Steam and come with TF2 items (and the second one comes with Borderlands 2 items).

Ahh I forgot one more! And this one really deserves a look!

Stacking: Double Fine Productions always churns out unique games. They made Psychonauts, Costume Quest, and Brutal Legend. I can definitely recommend anything they made. Espicially this game! This is about Russian Dolls (those two part dolls that can be stacked into each other. Hence the name). In this game, you can on the roll of Charlie, the smallest Russian doll around as heā€™s on a mission to save his family from a tyrant who has taken over the city. Charlie has the ability to STACK into other dolls. He has to go up in size by increments, so sometimes youā€™re stacked into 5 dolls at a time. As you go through the levels, youā€™ll find puzzles that will need to be solved by using other dollsā€™ unique abilities. Some punch, some slap, some cause smelly flatulence, and some are completely useless (not every doll is going to be helpful). Itā€™s a very unique puzzle game with amazing atmosphere and scenery. $15 on steam and includes the side story ā€˜The Lost Hobo Kingā€™ for free.

Iā€™d suggest buying it on GamersGate http://www.gamersgate.com/DD-SOSC/shira-oka-second-chances

Yeah. The graphics are pretty funky in the old versions of EV, especially Override. There are plugins to fix that though. If youā€™re playing the remakes using the Nova engine then the plugins are:
http://www.ambrosiasw.com/assets/modules/addonfiles/download.php?addon=1615
http://www.ambrosiasw.com/assets/modules/addonfiles/download.php?addon=3401

Iā€™d have to go looking for plugins for the original games.
