well… it’s not exactly “first person” but most of first person shooters are actions… so yeh xD

Action games can be first or third person.
The first person view is often used in Action and RPG games.

First person is just refering to the point of view of the character.

Ok.

Thanks!

You can imagine action games as being old side- or vertically-scrolling shooters, classic twin-stick shooters, FPS, whatever. Even some sorts of platformer.

Though the emphasis on AI doesn’t make as much sense for the older games.

Slender Man would be FPS horror

It actually does.
If you imagine that 80’s games were nothing more than a few kilobytes, compared to the Megabytes and Gigabytes games now a days have.
The amount of space A.I. took is relatively the same.

I’m not sure that all of them count as having AI at all, by the way the game describes it. Some scrolling shooters, the player’s actions had no effect whatsoever on the actions of the enemies.

I think that is not equal. FPS and TPS is a subgenre of action.
If the game is FPS or TPS is up to your imagination.

I agree!

The genres are pretty broad. Action, in particular, is a wide one. It encompasses shoot-em-ups (side-scrolling and top-scrolling), platformers, shooters (first-person and third-person), fighting games, survival horror games, and probably a bunch of other things I can’t think of right now.

Some real-life examples for point of reference (at least as I understand the genres):

Action - Contra, Super Mario Bros, Halo, Uncharted, Resident Evil, Soul Calibur, Ratchet & Clank, Devil May Cry, Castlevania

Adventure - Legend of Zelda, Myst, Alundra

RPG - Final Fantasy, Breath of Fire, Dragon Quest, SaGa Frontier

Simulation - The Sims, Simcity, Game Dev Tycoon

Strategy - Command and Conquer, Warcraft, Starcraft, Xcom

Casual - Candy Crush Saga, Farmville, Girls Love Robots, Amateur Surgeon, Tetris, Tamagotchi

Action-RPG - Deus Ex, Borderlands, Demon’s Souls, The Elder Scrolls

I always call my virtual pet/casual games some sort of vaguely humorous name based on Tamigotchi

what’s X-Terran Conflict?
action-adventure-simulation-strategy?

Never heard of it. If I get bored enough, I’ll look up gameplay videos some night and edit my post to add it to a list.

Woops…

Thanks for pointing that out.
