I have made a small mod with some basic fixes I thought were important for the game’s enjoyment. I have:
Changed developer, publisher, reviewer and console names to their real counterparts;
Changed console images to real pictures;
Made console pictures evolve with time, as with the PC. When the Gameboy is retired, for example, it’s image will be the Gameboy Micro.
Changed the custom consoles’ pictures to real and concept consoles (the OUYA, for example). 12 to chose from instead of 4 with different colours.
I am thinking of changing:
The names of magazines that aproach you for interviews, possibly reporters’ names too.
I am looking for people who can help me with:
Creating new avatars (animations will probably be needed too);
Creating new game genres.
I made this topic to see if there is interest in the release of this (also if the developers are fine with that, otherwise I obviously won’t), and if there is someone willing/capable of doing the changes I cannot do. I don’t think anyone has released something like this.
I know @TestSubject0 wasn’t allowed to make a mod maker… so I don’t think Patrick and Daniel will be ok with this. But if they are, I’m definitely going to check it out!
Real company / product names & images fall under the trademark law, images especially fall under the copyright law. You have to check if the trademarks have special licenses, if they have, you have to fulfill the related trademark licences to use them in “your” product. For images you should check if they have a free license like a “Creative Commons” license, to fulfill the related requirements is relative easy, otherwise you have to get a special permission of the copyright holder, and you have to check if the trademark law related to the license agreement of the holder company allows you to use their product images in other products.
And of course you have to get the permission of Greenheartgames to modify THEIR product.
I am developing my own game now, that gives me enough freedoms to bring my creative potential into life. But I had to decide which license to use, I chose a free license to give others more freedoms too. But e.g. the Creative Commons license has some restrictions in relation to e.g. the GPL license, more about restrictions and possibilities with a free license like GPL here https://github.com/mctteam/mct/wiki/License
It is not a mod, but the project has the focus to include a good design which will allow a wide range of definition files to create mods for it. First approaches for that are located here https://github.com/mctteam/mct/wiki/Modifications (and the definition files concept will make it easer to use the source for more than one project)
I did not know mods had to abide by these rules. I mean, I thought that since mods are not products made for profit, or even sale, they would fall under a fair usage category. It’s not like I’m claiming ownership of anything. Anyway you are surely right. I’d like to hear from the devs first though before giving up on this.
Alternatively I could make a tutorial on how to change this. It took me probably 5 hours of work to do everything here so it would be fairly easy to explain.
Yes it might not be obvious in every case, because in general thoughs are a free property, but the world is full of control and wants to establish special rules about how to convert thoughs into money, I had to learn something about law, I did not know it before too …
With my projects I want to avoid that somebody makes my thoughs into money mainly
The company of my last project has problems to use my GPL source, because they use a dual license system, I like them, because they support the free culture, but it can be complicated sometimes to make a business in it …
I think a solution by the devs will be available in future, they signalized that they want to work together with interested people to make some sort of a mod-able feature …
