Take the Apple Ipod, Apple’s ethos is militaristically uniform, they want us all to look the same with no room for unique UI’s etc.
So of course people set out to crack it and created the jailbreak software. This lead to a whole underground of software and apps for the Ipod which otherwise we would never have seen.
At the far end of the spectrum you have Bethesda, every tool they own and all the assets are free to use and create mods for the game with which they were shipped, this has added years of extra gameplay to their titles and gives them plenty to work with for the next title. Its fiscally sensible in this case.
Its more a case of pick a side of the fence and stick to it.
From a personal point of view i’m a fan of having sandbox mode and cheats implemented because if they are implemented by the devs at least you know they won’t destroy your game. New, inexperienced, casual or impatient gamers often cheat, so its better they do it under the guidance of the devs.
in my opinion i prefer companies like beth, they seem to tackle the whole cheat/mod thing to the nail and if you ask me that is why there games have surpass so many levels, look at Skyrim! and are very profitable. even with there games been pirated they still sold millions of copies.
very true XD. Sometime it takes an approach which is most beneficial to both party to increase more sales. Piracy is like a double-edge sword from my point of view. It can help boost awareness so more people will buy but at the same time it could bring down sales and income due to the fact that people are using pirated than original.
