Okay… while I was translating the game to dutch I came across this sentence:
Dialogues are part of storytelling as well but also provide interaction between NPC’s (non-player characters) and the player.
As you can see, the game says NPC means non-player characters. I’m pretty sure this is not the correct definition. As far as I know NPC means: non-playable character. If you take a look on Google too, you will see it actually is non-playable character.
Pretty fun to see such a word getting a wrong explanation, especially because it’s a game where you make games, and therefore gamemakers should know the good definition of this word, because it’s used very much in the actual game industry.
Correct me if I’m not right, but I’m pretty sure it’s like this.
It’s a character that is unplayable by the player and isn’t a player. If they’re wrong on this, then that means that it’s a player because it’s saying non-player-characters meaning not a player’s character.
A NPC is still sort of a player, he/she is ‘played’ by the computer. It’s an unplayable character for the people, but it has to be player to even exist.
Yes, indeed. He is played by a computer. The character is NOT payable by other characters ingame, like the real player. He/she has to be played by a computer to be able to interact with someone. This means he has a sort of player, the AI/computer.
It says Non Playable Character for me, though. Most of it even says Non Playable Character and I think it’s a better explanation/definition then Non-player Character, that sounds a bit odd doesn’t it?
