First post praise and general questions

This is my first post here, and I am happy to say; this game brings a smile to my face. I am currently unemployed, so I’m playing games I already have or finding free ones every now and again. I’m playing this one because my buddy lent me a flash drive with the installer and I am impressed… As soon as I am employed again (which should be in about a week) I will be buying this game so I can enjoy the perks of receiving updates and such in the future. Very few Sim games catch my attention, and you Green Heart Games have captured it well!

(yes, I admit, I usually download a game from “unauithorized” sources. Crippleware urks me…may go back to the “shareware on floppy days”. But I do buy the games I find worth it)

I have a couple questions to be gin with…it seems that there are certain genre/topic combinations that are more successful…and some fo them you shouldn’t attempt till you have better tech for an engine (SSI and Bethesda started with genres that were quite daunting to make and also risky to sell at the time) I take it, this biased opinion is definitely a feature? I’m not just doing it wrong? Is there going to be possibility in the future of starting out with odd combos and with some luck make them work? (Everyone thought Minecraft wasn’t going to make it for as long as it has)

Also, is there more of a non-mathy type guide for this game than what’s on the wiki? I understand the math involved, as much as my pre-cal experience lets me… The guide I have been looking at is : Success Guide and some of the suggestions near the end are games, I for one, do not like. I tried starting a career with IF type Fantasy Adventures and slowly moved to graphical games and such, sticking with Sims, Strategies and RPGs as my real world favorite genres. So…any more advice for a noob at the game?

Again, Thank you Green Heart Games for taking the dreariness out of my life that is unemployment! You guys rock!

General tips for combinations that work well is simple. If you’ve played a great game type that had that topic, it should work out.

Action - Sports, Racing, Military, Ninja
Adventure - Medieval, Fantasy, Pirate
RPG - Fantasy, Sci-Fi
Strategy - Military, Sci-Fi, Medieval, Fantasy
Simulation - Business, Space, Airplane, Life

A good combination will only get you so far. Proper focus on development areas is key. Adventure and RPG use more story and gameplay, Sim and Strategy are Engine-based, Action is mostly Gameplay. We can’t ignore an area to max out the other two; there is a balance.

There is a lot more to consider, such as System, target audience, additional (engine) features and marketing. Hopefully someone else can fill in more information, or you can just browse the Wiki found here: http://gamedevtycoon.wikia.com/wiki/Main_Page
