I was wondering, what strategies do you guys use when starting your game? For example, I use to create game until I’m able to research custom engine. Then I create another game before creating my first engine. After that I use the interval of games-research-games or games-training-games. And I create engine after I got improved graphics. So, what strategies do you use, and can you guys help me improve my strategy?
I use Racing + Simulation to get a head start because I am always successful with those.
Can that work further on? I tried to do it once with 2D V2 and then 3D V3 but the second time the number went from a full 7 rating down to a 5.5, Still not managed to get it back up, after the fourth, rating of 2.5 my company went bankrupt.
Create a lot of games. ( random combination of genre and topic )
Research “custom engine” and go to next office, with more than 10M cash.
the secret is to use the right combo at the right moment, for exemple you can start with Racing/simu on pc, then rpg/fantasy on console, then military/strategy on pc etc etc my strategy combine the good combo with the good hardware, after that when yu get the MMO its too easy.
but dont waste money on engine before 3dv1for the first one wait to unlock to most of the new feature(mouse pad etc), before that focus on design and recruit one guy strong in technology, train yourself beetween each game, like that you can do fast job, when yu are at like 450 or 500 in design start to build an op engine with 3v2
Okay, thx for the input… going to try some of them… By the way, if we aren’t going to focus too much on creating engines before 3D V1, then should we focus only in 3D? what about the 2DV3 - 2DV4?
of course dnt forget 2d v3 and v4 but before that there is lot small features you have to unlock, like better ai mouse pad quest etc but if you have lot money you can even use engine to generate RP, depend what stage you are , but most of the time i try to unlock all the research i have before my first engine, and i keep use it only if have bad reviews.
Before you even start the game, decide wether you want to go the design route (RPG, Adventure) or the tech-route (Action, Sim, Strategy).
Then i make games only in these genres, to raise the level of the important areas quickly. I also try to make each game a new combo, as this gives a xp-boost and a boost in research points.
The first engine gets everything that is avaible and all of this gets also put directly into the next game.
With the subsequent engines i usually put everything i need to get the maximum effect in all areas into it but only update one major area per game.
So the first game used with a new engine might only get the new gameplay-features, the second also gets the new story-features and so on… until i get a game with all new features enabled. After that i improve my games by training my employees.
As for 2d vs 3d, i ditch 2d as soon as i get 3Dv1.
I always plan ahead what kind of genres i will be using. Like what MagicMagor said either only tech heavy or design heavy.
It is possible to mix, but i just don’t like playing like that.
On start i will make a few games with the planned genres untill i have enough RP to get my first engine with at least 6 features.
Then using the new engine i only use 2Dv2 and basic sound making that first game which usually gives me a 8+ game or better and then for the next games i slowly add a single features every game.
Like this i always improve my previous score, thus making better games and better score. At game #10 or so i will have a 9+ streak going on.
When i have about 5M in cash, i move to the new office and do my staff management training and hire 4 staff with low stats.
Simply because i want to make new games a little bit better then the previous ones ( actually last best score )
I always sync my staffs vacation times, so they’re all rested and back to work in Month 1.
Reason for this is, because i want to have a game ready for release right after the G3.
After every released game i train myself and staff to improve game scores.
Thats my main strategy to make a succesfull gaming studio
I’ve tried that method before, although I’m not focusing on a single genre (mostly RPG though). But all I get is a 7 average total score. The best is around 8.0. All that in the first level. But when I make it to level 2 I would place 2 or 3 critical feature and I’m able to get mostly 8 to 9 on the average total score… perhaps you could enlightened me to what am I doing wrong?
Could be your slider settings are off. For the single Genre they are very basic.
In most video’s i see on youtube i see people going with very difficult settings with sliders at 25% or 45% and anything that is basically unneseccary.
i used these settings untill i reach MultiGenre.
Action
Sim
Strategy
100/50/0, 0/50/100, 0/100/50
RPG
0/100/100, 100/100/50, 100/100/100.
Adventure
0/100/100, 100/50/0, 100/50/0.
Casual
0/100/0, 0/100/0, 0/100/100.
Try them out.
Near the beginning, I always make a space sim game called something like To the Moon, and it is always one of my most successful game series’
I always find that Racing + Simulation/Casual is always getting 10/10 for me.
can you be more spesific on how you could create the 10/10 Racing games? because I tried to make it a 10/10 but after my first release on a new game, it got only 7.5/10 with 2D V2 and then a 7 with 3D V2… I try to use slider composition from the wiki and use simulation as my genre with the game…
Well I try it multiple times but usually for the sliders…make sure gameplay is max (100% focused on), story is 0% focused on, and Engine is 30-35% focused on. Second slider would be dialogue 0%, level design about 30-35%, and AI 100% focused. And third slider would be about 30-35% of Graphics and World Design and the majority to work on is sound so make sure that is about 60% there.
So basically, Sound, AI, and Gameplay is the main focus and they should have 3 quarters of the bar filled up on the stages.
Thanks, will be sure to try in my next game…
