Did you have a Mascot?

Like it says on the tin, did you have any video game mascots? A mascot is a character which appears in many of your games.

We had one for a while. It was an anthropomorphic cat known as ‘Kat’, from the ‘Time Kat’ series. He had around four games, two on the mBox and another two on the GS:

  • Time Kat ( mBox )
  • Kat 2Dimensional ( GS )
  • Kat 3: Future Purrfect ( mBox )
  • Kat Kart ( GS )

It was basically a Blinx copy-cat, no pun intended. I imagine he wasn’t very popular because his games never sold very well, but I had no intention of letting it go for a while. Eventually the mBox 360 came out, and we marketed towards a mature audience instead, leaving behind Kat.

On both of my favorite playthroughs I had a mascot.
On one Avi, a robotic girl created through being a aviator creation(spaceship) in the first game and a beautiful robot girl in the next 16. The games where always popular so she was probably as popular as Pikachu/Link., she took place in a 17 part series for every console except mbox, and mbox 360.
On my next playthrough I had(ongoing) I made a game called Vodkablitz,4 part series, where you played 4 diffrent types of medieval fighters, Joan de’ Arc, a knight, Jyrekof, a viking, Alexander, a Parsi mercenary, and finally a conquistador named Ronaldo. But the real star of that was the item they searched for, the beloved vodka they’ve only heard of from Russian and Polish soldiers. Again no game of there’s was less than 8.25 so fairly popular going from Gameboy Color to XBox 360.

Vodkablitz reminds me of my most popular game, Fistful of Jam. The hero of FoJ was a kung-fu adept, looking to learn the ancient art of the Fist of Jam. It was a mature Comedy/Adventure for the PC, and it was extremely popular.

I was making a sequel, Fistful of Nuts, which till today had the most hype I’ve ever seen. I made the game with the full intention to trash it; Which I did. I decided to do it for no other reason than the irony of it, I almost backed out when I saw the hype but I stuck through trashing it. I imagine that the disappointment around it’s abandonment was huge, especially because a demo was released that showed the awesomeness of it.

I bet the next time you see, a Fistful of Jam fangame was made, you can bet they where taking the demo and improving it.
The best part of Vodkablitz is I came up with the story after seeing what I named it but it was for young audiences so I made it like JRPG’s where the western versions replaces liquor with soda pop. From there on I made it more and more inappropriately cliche.

Well of Course! My Popular, recently jaw-breaking and market-takeover-ing game Space Invators 4 has a mascot from it’s prequels named Jack the Invator!

Well don’t be so vague, what’s the character like! This is a creative topic, you know.

Here’s one from my latest game. His name is Flex, he’s an anthropomorphic badger, and he’s partly based off of the Sonic games. Flex lifts, stacks and throws objects to reach the end of the stage as quickly as possible. Although he doesn’t run very fast, the player is supposed to think on their feet and build or destroy structures to get to the finish line.

I got 2 of them actually

Zephiros:
in every single playthrough I’m always doing sequels of my first games that worked once I unlock it and one of the game was Zephiros.
Right now I got 10 sequels for it:
Zephiros: Blood Moon; Zephiros: Dark Sun; Zephiros: Doom Fall; Zephiros: Moonrise
and I don’t remember the other ones

Ulfric:
same as zephiros, I totally didn’t get the name from skyrim.
10 sequels as well:
Ulfric’s Journey II, III, IV, V, VI, VII, HD, IX, X
I did HD instead of VIII because it didn’t fit in the name box thingy

I’m too lazy to create characteristical characteristics to my characters.

I always made a few games starring Weegee (basically Luigi, except more comically retarded), although my bread and butter is gritty action RPGs like Sobsis (Crysis) and Abiosis (BioShock)

I had Super Dude (SuperMan) It got me three games; Super Dude , Death Of Super Dude and then I took a break with it made a MMO called super Dude Online ( not based on the series of games) and then finally came Super Dude Returns, which well…Tanked all the others were all high end eights or nine’s and then Returns came out and got something like a 4

I didn’t managed to make a character, but I made few games starring “SurbanLiner”, which is a train that looks like this.

I have a few franchises I like to revisit whenever I start a new game. Either highly successful serials (Guerilla, Voidrunner, Pretty Pony anything), or concepts I really like that sometimes get lucky but generally aren’t huge hits (The Longest Drive, a racing RPG, and Goblinville, a fantasy simulation). Of these, I can think of 3 that I imagine having consistent and identifiable mascots.

Lunar is a series of werewolf action games. The first few star a man named Hagen who wears an iron wolf mask. The mask serves as armor while he’s in human form, but also allows him to transform into a wolfman while in the dark. Bright light will prevent or cancel the transformation, but the full moon will make wolf form more powerful. Hagen either remains a consistent character or is surpassed in fame by the mask depending on how many Lunar games I make in a particular play-through. If I only do a few sequels, it’s Hagen all the way. If I do like 12 sequels and some spin-offs, then I imagine Hagen is retired after the 4th or 5th game and replaced by successors of various description who use the same iron mask (or a similar one) to access Hagen’s transformative powers (in this case, the mask itself becomes the mascot).

I also have the Softpaw games, a series of werewolf RPGs targeted at young gamers starring a werewolf pup named Connor. Unlike Lunar, the werewolves of this series are always in upright-wolf form. I imagine the Softpaw games being lightheated, colorful, and fun. The first few are for Gameling, but I can see later titles playing like Kingdom Hearts. Just fuzzier. I don’t think I’ve ever gone beyond 5 of these, so I don’t imagine Connor ever being replaced or surpassed.

Finally there’s Astrid from the Pretty Pony RPG series. While each game has a different settting and cast (imagine Final Fantasy meets My Little Pony…don’t judge me), Astrid serves as a narrator for each one. She introduces the story, and narrates for any cutscenes and FMVs that call for it (and tutorials in the later games). She’s like Arazlam Durai from Final Fantasy Tactics, except a colorful horse. She’s a storyteller, and each of the Pretty Pony RPGs is framed as a story she tells. I also imagine her being mentioned or incidentally involved in other Pretty Pony games (particularly the Tales series), but her only significant role is as narrator in the RPG series.

I imagine each other game I make, even the longer serials, either using a new cast with each game or allowing the player to create their own character (either way precludes an iconic mascot-type character).
