Cracked got me here, and now i have questions

Hello all!
As the title says, one article on cracked made me find this game out and i must say it sounds very intresting. I’ve seen it’s been greenlighted and should be released in a couple months or so hence my questions:

1- will the price change once it’s on steam?
2- if i buy it now will i get a steam key?

  1. This is unlikely as it would be unfair on previous purchasers who paid the higher price. That said, it is not out of the realm of possibility for there to be a weekend sale price to celebrate the launch, whenever that may be.
  2. Yes, if you purchase the Desktop edition via the Greenheart store. Maybe, if you buy from the Windows 8 Store.

Note: The Desktop edition is available on Windows XP through to Windows 8, as well as Mac OS X 10.7+, and Linux, all in one purchase.

That’s up to Valve.

Who said the new price would be lower? I’m betting it will increase, if anything.

Steam usually keeps retail price. New indie games from Greenlight usually go on sale for 10% off the first week.

Whats more important though: Will GDT participate in the Steam Card system? I think greenheart gets like 10% of every market transaction with their cards/emoticons/backgroudns.

Releasing the game on Steam at this stage has no financial downsides. Any cent they make from selling the game through Steam, is pure profit, even after Valve have taken their cut. All of the actions required to make the game available through Steam, such as updating the game and supporting it on multiple platforms, have already been done, or were already in the plans for the future.

Whilst Valve doesn’t release the exact details of their cut, they are known for being fair to developers and publishers alike, and the publisher (which in the case of indies like Greenheart is the developer themselves) has the final say on the price of the game. No sales or price alterations are done without asking the permission of the publisher first.

If the price is higher on Steam, then no-one will buy the game through Steam, as buying the game direct from Greenheart means you get a Steam Key anyway, plus the Desktop editions.

If the price is slightly lower (say $7), then that may make sense since you lose out on the open freedom of the current Desktop edition. However, that would mean the price of the Windows 8 Modern UI edition would likely have to lower for the same reason, which could potentially outrage existing purchasers.

If the price is significantly lower, then every purchaser (not just the Windows 8 customers) could be outraged at having paid the higher price. Now, you could argue that they paid an early adopter’s fee, but since Greenheart explicitly chose to price the Desktop edition at the same price as the Modern UI edition, specifically so as to not upset existing customers, I doubt that such a fee would be accepted by Greenheart or their fans.

Thus the price is 99.9% guaranteed to stay the same on Steam as on other platforms.

It’s priced fine now. Games of a similar size go for ten bucks or more. And if you have ever used Steam, you would know that popular titles go on sale quite frequently. Anywhere from 10-75% off or more.

I read the Cracked article too, long after purchasing the game. Buy this, it’s fantastic and you’ll get a Steam key once it hits.

I was actually told the polar opposite, that the final decision on prices rested with Valve, barring an angry large publisher (EA or Activision for example) being upset with Valve’s choice. And I have in fact seen games costing as much as triple the same price on other platforms. Examples: DLC Quest $1 on Xbox, $3 on steam. 10,000,000 $2 on smartphones, $5 on steam. Furthermore, many steam users have commented that Valve often sets the prices of games higher than they really should, in order to make the sale appear more attractive.

Assuming people who buy the game from Greenheart AFTER the game is released on steam still get the steam key, It had appeared to me to be a reward for Greenheart’s early adopters. Furthermore, if this were the case, then if the price is the SAME on steam, why buy it there and just have the steam version, when buying it from Greenheart (or Microsoft, as I did in December) for the same price would give you both versions?

This I agree with completely. Outside of sales, it is very unlikely the price on steam will be cheaper.

I wouldn’t quite say 99.9%, though I would say 90%+. But in the unlikely event the price is different, it will be more, not less.

Well Im guessing that GHG would want the game for $8 on Steam, which shows they will make a profit, but then you got the middle man (eg: Steam) and the game would probably be raised so they can make a profit.

Which Cracked article was it? Do you have the URL?

Thank you all for the replies! I wasn’t worried about the price bieng lowered but rather raising once it’s on Steam. I’ll buy the game on monday as soon as i can move some money on my cashcard. Is it confirmed 100% that i’ll get a steam key if i buy it now from the store?

Also, the article was this

Yes. This has been confirmed many times on these forums and in the Greenheart Blog.

As I thought, $7.99 was an early adopter [discount] price. $9.99 is the normal price.
