Best free game engine?

Hello,

I have been using Unity3D for quite some time. I do like the engine, but I want to try something different. I want an engine that has an IDE and supports building games for Windows, Mac, and Linux. I have looked at Polycode, and I LOVE the idea, but the Editor is SO buggy! Once the editor is fixed, Polycode will be a free alternative to Unity3D! But pleae tell me some game engines that are free, have a editor, and can make builds of games for Windows, Mac, and Linux (or more, of couse).

Thanks for reading!

Try Construct?

I know @Stian is a fan of http://www.godotengine.org/, which looks really neat and is not only free but also open source and MIT licensed.

Free engines I know:
Unity
Godot
GameMaker
GameSalad
Construct Classic/Construct 2

All of them (except for Unity) look similar and are pretty easy to learn.
I’ve only tried Unity and C2, but I think that C2 or CC (or maybe GameMaker) are the best.

Patrick beat me to it I see!

Unreal (1,2,3,4) if you know how to use it.

I tried GoDot, and I can’t get into it. I guess I will start using Unreal as my main engine then. I have tried it before, but shyer away because it uses C++. But I have been programming in C++ for a few days, and I understand it way better now. Thanks you guys

Source 2 or Source (the legend) SDK. they are so @#$!#$% cool tho.

When you say you can’t get into it, what do you mean? Keep in mind that the developers respond to questions personally on the IRC and there is a beatiful wiki: https://github.com/okamstudio/godot/wiki

I’m only familiar with Source, i want to check out Source 2 soon  I hope it’s as great they say

Stencyl is good for beginners. It’s also quick. Clickteam had a better Pro version but I think for beginners who don’t want to pay, Stencyl is the way to go. Game Maker is also nice but you have to spend a bit of time learning GML in order to take full advantage of it. Unfortunately, the free version of Stencyl doesn’t export to Windows, Mac or Linux, but it does export to Flash so just use an ad on Newgrounds.

Okay, thank you everyone. For Linux, I will be using Polycode or Godot Engine. For Windows, I will stick with Unity3D.
