Being able to develop for relatively old consoles

Now with the recent release of FIFA 14 and with it being the last game for the PS2, I think this brings up the thought that we might be able to have something like this in Game Dev Tycoon. Now of course by old consoles I mean something along the lines of the PS2, Xbox, and when the game years are far enough out, perhaps the 360 and PS3 as well. It’s just an idea, and doesn’t really matter, but it’s not a bad idea to be the company who makes the ‘Goodbye’ game for a console. Thoughts?

Yeah! There’s still some crazy guys that still creates games for the Atari 2800. So why not us in the game?

The PS2 is still on the market, it just isn’t stocked in a lot of brick and mortar stores. GDT allows you to make games for a console until it’s retired completely, which is presumably long after a particular console leaves the public interest.

If I recall correctly, the original Playstation wasn’t actually discontinued until shortly after the PS3 was released. With the PS4 coming out soon, and FIFA 14 declared the last PS2 game ever, I think it’s safe to say the PS2 is only just now about to be discontinued. Possibly not even for a while yet. Until then, Sony is still making them and they’re not technically off the market (even if they are hard to find).

I find that aspect of the missing Atari 2600 strange, I was wondering what WAS missing but I could never figure it out, you have some grand knowledge on your shoulders Wave.

I see the aspect of being able to make stuff until it’s retired, but it just seemed that the consoles in question were discontinued kind of earlier than they should be.

*Discontinued in GDT

Agreed. A lot of the GDT consoles do seem to vanish quite quickly. Except for the Gameling, which sticks around longer than the real thing, but fills in for the missing Gameling Color and Gameling Advance. Games go off the market rather fast, as well. I’m thinking consoles die off fast in order to encourage advancement, and games die off fast to prevent GDT from being too easy.
