Hey @Sophira,
First off, I think the word ‘ripoff’ is used way too often nowadays.
From the above quote I can safely assume that you would have called Game Tycoon a ripoff if it had been released after Game Dev Tycoon. I think that the word ‘ripoff’ doesn’t apply between these two games at all.
Aside from the topic that both games obviously have in common, there aren’t that many similarities between the two games that aren’t topic-related.
I’m also going a little further in my assumptions and say that you probably haven’t heard about Game Dev Story. I assume this based on my earlier assumption that you would have called it a ripoff if it had been released later. Seeing as a ripoff of a ripoff is basically the same as a ripoff of the original, I can assume that you aren’t aware that Game Dev Tycoon is a way more valid candidate to be called a ripoff. In this case that would be a ripoff of Game Dev Story.

This may be true. On the other hand, however, that could’ve been almost exactly the same scenario between Game Dev Story and Game Dev Tycoon. If Game Dev Tycoon hadn’t been such a good game, it would have been exactly the same. Perhaps even worse, seeing as Game Dev Story and Game Dev Tycoon have way more in common with eachother than Game Dev Tycoon and Game Tycoon do.
There was a pretty big hype surrounding Game Dev Story after its release on the iPhone and there are perhaps only a handful of games like it. You could actually say Game Dev Tycoon is a ripoff of Game Dev Story and that, after its release, it launched itself by riding Game Dev Story’s hype. From that point of view I think it’s fair to say that Game Dev Tycoon getting some slightly negative impressions because of Game Tycoon is best described as ‘karma’.
Like I said at the beginning of this post, I think the word ‘ripoff’ is used way too often nowadays. And while I do believe that Game Dev Tycoon is a ripoff of Game Dev Story, in this case, I also don’t see that as a negative thing. Greenheart Games has done a great job of expanding upon the concept that is Game Dev Story. If I had to choose which of the two games is better, it would obviously be Game Dev Tycoon. But it’s very likely that Game Dev Tycoon wouldn’t be around if Game Dev Story hadn’t been made. Gotta love the original for that.
P.S. In case you’re wondering why I’m calling Game Dev Story the original, while it was released for iOS and Android in 2010 and Game Tycoon, as you said, was released in 2006, is because the iOS and Android versions were ported versions. The original release date of Game Dev Story was in April 1997 for the PC, although only available in Japan(ese).
