Adding the Shooter Genre

I have to admit, as an avid FPS gamer, I was bummed out there was no Shooter genre. I read else where on the Forums that you just use the “Action” genre, but really?? FPS IS a genre. In fact, it’s a very popular genre: Call of Duty, Halo, Gears of War, Ghost Recon, 007, Battlefield, Medal of Honor, Counterstrike just to name a few.Sure we could just make an “Action” game, but why not a Shooter? Then we could make Action Shooters, Military Shooters (CoD, Ghost Recon, Rainbow Six), Space Shooters (Halo), RPG Shooters (Mass Effect), etc.

Yeah, but they’re all just action games.

It would overlap with Action as a Genre. It could be a Topic, but just like others will make only a Great Combo with Action.

Even if it were added, if you really want it to mean FPS, don’t call it ‘shooter’. The game looks at the history of home gaming, and it’s only recent that ‘shooter’ has been assumed to mean FPS. It isn’t even universally FPS now.

FPS is misnamed as a ‘Genre’ when it just tells you the mechanics of the game. First-person camera view where you shoot a weapon.
DOOM, Portal, Halo. All three use the FPS mechanics but are different Genres. DOOM was Horror/Sci-Fi (Last Marine on Mars fighting back demons from Hell), Portal was Puzzle (even with the Sci-Fi elements like GLaDOS and the Portal Gun) and Halo was Sci-Fi (do I even need to explain that? :P)

Look up Extra Credits on YT/Penny Arcade TV or at http://extra-credits.net for more about how some “genres” are misnamed mechanics groupings.

What might make a suitable genre under the name ‘Shooter’ (or similar) would be the ‘Shmup’ or 'Shoot-‘em-up’ genre, for games like Galaga.

How about a “forum trolling” genre? No, really, some consider places like something awful, 4chan, and the world of warcraft general discussion forum to be a game. Yeah.

Except those things you’ve listed are, in the terms of this game, topics, not genres.

Topic is closer to Genre in the terms of this game than the mechanics (Action, Adventure, RPG…) are.

Mechanics drive the game, Genre is what the game is about and why we play the game. You go to Iron Man 3 for the Superhero elements of the movie (as that’s the Genre/Topic) and not the CGI technology (Mechanics) used to provide the film.

Yes, but in terms of the terms used within GDT, action, strategy etc are the genres, and superhero is topic

maby make a 3rd choise to makes like fps, rts, mmorpg, sidescrolling cardboard fp and fps (like an snes game or pc doom where fps was very ummm carbdboardy anway you get the idea

FPS = Action + Something. CoD? Probably Action/Military. Fallout? Action/Apocalypse. No need for it.
RTS = Strategy + Something.
MMORPG = RPG + Something + MMO option

There’s no need to have a third layer.

I have a better idea, lets make it so theres only one layer, and the options are:

  • Really awesome game
  • Mediocre game
  • Bloody awful game
  • Game that steals ones soul

Exactly. Just a mechanic.

Elder Scrolls I, II were “FPS” but they weren’t solely “action” They were RPGs.
