A few questions for people good at the game

Say you have 2d grapics v2 and v3 in your game engine if you make 10 games using v3 and then use v2 will the game penalise you for it, does it have an effect on reviews?

The problem is every game I develop for the ps1 is costing like 200k and I feel like im just treading water. The one time I tried to make a cheaper game I got bad reviews so not sure if it was because I left out some features but it’s frustrating. I’m making pc games in between which are turning a profit but barely keeping afloat whereas previously I was making enough to keep locking new stuff and eventually make a new engine and I’m just surviving.

Can anyone help?

I can tell you that no, I don’t believe it does. I had to scale back drastically at one point, and eventually made it past the almost bankrupt stage. During that time, I was making the most basic game possible (V1 Graphics, Basic Sounds, little else).

I didn’t keep up in 3D technology and was using 2D V5 for a long time. I did get penalised.

No game I made would get rated above a 5 for a long time until I realised it was because of my lack of 3D and once I developed that I was instantly hitting 9’s again and now have 3D V7.

I think, it won’t penalise you much unless you get way behind. I mean, I was using 3D V1 while people were on 3D V5 and it hurt me a lot.

Well, like any other part of an engine or game, there are probably time markers for when certain tech is (dis-)effective.

I had the other experience since I achieved a 10/10/9/10 for an Action MMO with 2D Graphics V4 recently.
I had developed 3D Graphics all the way up to V7 from the moment it was available for research.
Recently I dumped the 3D Graphics for 2D Graphics V3 and got penalised because it is way older.
For 2D Graphics 4 and 5 the penalites there are for outdated graphics which appear to be in the game reviews are either not that hard or not present at all.

Long story short: there are penalties, but the closer you get to up-to-date engine parts the penalties get lower.
