Did anyone tried to complete the game with 2D graphics only ? As soon as I’m finished with my game company called "Greenheart Games (its the most successful game i’ve done to date ?!?). I will try it myself
I tried and you’re pretty much handicapping yourself by doing so. You’re making a lot more profit if you go with 3D graphics as soon as you unlock the first version. If you go up to 2DV5 and then go back to 3DV1 people will be rioting in the streets and you’ll lose a lot of fans and get fairly bad reviews because of the stone age technology.
My very first successful play-through was done with 2d graphics. If you aren’t going after AAA games, it is a perfectly viable, though not ideal, option. As Mike said, it is generally a handicap. That decision to go 3d graphics v1 or 2d graphics v3 is kinda stacked against 2d graphics. Not only does 2d graphics cap out at a lower level, 2d graphics v3 costs 80 RP while 3dv1 only costs 15.
If one wanted to do a medium-games only run (and utilize the GS, PPS, gphone, gpad, mpad later in the game) you could certainly get away with 2d graphics as the tech levels on the portable devices is low and will hamstring the benefit you’d get from a high 3d graphics level.
If you want to go with bigger titles, go with 3d early. In the end, the main benefit to your graphics is the ability to increase it over time. 3d graphics have 2 more levels of increase you can benefit from compared to 2d.
The tech penalty on going 2D really saddens me. The games I like most rarely rely on their graphics. I play simulations. Putting brilliant graphics on a simulation is like putting gumdrops on a cake. It helps with some recipes and some themes, but it’s not a core expectation for the baking of cakes. Yet in Game Dev Tycoon, every genre requires high graphics, and graphics alone determine the tech level of the game.
I’ve made the suggestion that the Strategy genre be changed to favor world design rather than graphics, as a means to differentiate it from its currently identical twin, Simulation. That would make it an ideal candidate to remain 2d if one wanted to go that route.
