I want to start by saying that i love this game and have been playing it like crazy for the past month
I have Avast Antivirus and for some reason today “Shortly after a virus database update” when i launed Game Dev i got an alert from Avast stating that the file i was trying to execute was suspicious and it moved the file to the chest
Now this cause me some confusion because i legally own the game AND it was perfectly fine up until today
So i tried to fill the form for Avast telling them its not a virus but that won’t take affect until the next update AND only if they agree that it isn’t a threat
I tried to re-install the game afterwards and even Firefox was trying to tell me that i shouldn’t try to execute the installer “assuming that its getting that info from my AntiVirus” but i executed the file anyway and as the game tries to install i get the message again, i try to press the “add the file to the scan exclusion list” but it won’t let me, the only option is to turn off avast and its not something i want to do… And yes i understand that its Avast thinking this but my question is
Why is it thinking this in the first place? It has NEVER done this to any other game in the past, anyone else getting this issue with Avast? Again this seemed to have happened after my last avast database update
I’m also having the same problem and i sent the report to avast as it offer you to send the program to avast so they check it out i guess to see if files are safe then remove it from the virus blocker as safe?
odd, I’ve just updated my Avast installation and see the same issue but only while installing the game.
It seems that the the temporary file the installer creates when extracting the .exe file is flagged by Avast. The installer itself is not flagged and after disabling Avast to complete the installation the final game files are also not flagged. I will contact Avast and try to get more information. My guess is that it’s a false positive - Unfortunately we had those before. Our installer is a standard InnoSetup based app with no custom modifications so it’s unlikely that there is an issue with the installer.
There should be an option to add C:\Program Files\Game Dev Tycoon in the exclusion list at the very least. Try doing that, then continue on.
Might I add, everyone is talking about how they had to reinstall. Isn’t it possible to go to the virus chest and restore that .exe, then everything should work fine (assuming you turn off avast before you enter the game, or add the path to an exclusion link)
Never the less, the issue will be resolved on Avast’s end, I’m sure of it. It’s only going to take some time, though.
although there is a button to add it to the exclusion list, when i hit it nothing happens, it also won’t show me where the chest is so i have no idea how to restore the files it shoves in there, for now i am just disabling Avast for 10 mins, enough time for me to launch the game
Hopefully Avast will fix this soon though, its annoying and if i forget to do it, i have to install the game
It seems the most recent update of Avast has flagged our files as dangerous. This is a False Positive and can be avoided by following the guide in the linked Post.
Thank you!! I had been trying to figure out where the exclusion option was on Avast, though it seems that its changed a bit since that thread was created, but it gave me enough of a general idea as to where it is
I can now enjoy Game Dev Tycoon AND Internet Security at the same time once again
Thats great, I made that thread today to facilitate the small flurry of emails due to avast’s update. Anti Virus companies do change how to create exceptions from version to version but most guides will point you in the right direction.

Avast is the same antivirus that I have that I was stating in my thread that I was having an issue with and I’m still trying to figure out why avast detected it as a virus before the fix
