[QUE] Changing console names

Hey guys!

I wanted to ask where I am able to change names from consoles?
I have the beta patch already installed.

Thx,
Alex

Ps: This is only for private porpuse

If somebody wants to know:

This has to be changed in the game code itself. You’re (as far as I know) not able to do it like a normal mod (adding events, platforms or topics) but I can be wrong.

That’s too bad. That was one of the things I was most looking forward to in a mod.

Well, you can change the code directly, but this isn’t allowed due to the copy rights of greenheart games (trust me i know! xD) at least it’s not allowed to distribute this file. However, I’m not sure if this also counts for private use. I think you can just change all the names in there but this will be alot of work since the original code has over 30k lines!!

OK I found it myself. But I think it is not so hard? With the search and find function in notepad it is makeable.

Let’s add a note here for posterity. I was one that wanted the realistic names too, but that seems to be a modification expressly forbidden by the EULA. Permission to mod does not extend to fixing the goofy, distracting names which hurt the realism of Game Dev Tycoon.

However, if someone wanted to pursue it anyway, one way to accomplish it would be to download the Beta patch and edit the code file (called “codeNw” in the directory named “compressed”), using the replace function of a program like Notepad. And don’t distribute or advertise it, so that we don’t get Greenheart in trouble.

Yeah that’s the way. Well I (we) can’t say for 100%, but if you don’t make it public you shouldn’t have any problem. Also games like GTA use real cars etc. and they don’t get sued for making them public. But no garantee.

But why, every football game has real names mods, and they football associations are much more stingy with their rights. Here we have just a bunch of names that can be mentioned in any product like books or movies without problem. There is even a commercial competitor from denmark with Gamebiz 3 which uses all real names without any license.

I don’t disagree, and I don’t know why it is expressly forbidden in the EULA. It’s their universe. We just live and play in it!

It is not their universe and at least in my country (Germany) any Eula is void anyway, unless it was agreed upon BEFORE purchase. So I can mod whatever I want into it.

Using Trademarked names or exact copies of assets from other games can either be a thin grey line or outright illegal depending on the copyright holders own EULA and Legal Team .

Bare in mind that some games that use names such as Aston Martin, Manchester United etc would have purchased or created an agreement with the copyright owner to use the name.

In other cases, such as porting armour from the Witcher & Witcher 2 into another game such as Skyrim, this is allowed freely because the owners “CD Projekt RED” expressly permitted this in their own EULA. However no other game company, as far as i know, allows the porting of its own assets into another game freely, Terra allows its armors to be ported pending permission as do the creators of Sims & Second Life assets.

However, in the case of items such as armor, weapons and clothes etc they can be duplicated to be an exact replica if everything is created from scratch by yourself. E.g. you can create the assassins creed suits in autodesk, texture it in photoshop and release it as a mod for another game. This example has already been done many times over.

That doesn’t mean that one day Ubisoft won’t revoke this and create a trademark or copyright for its armor styles that means it will no longer be allowed. However, its been 7 years and they have not made any attempt to do this, therefore it is not something modders worry about.

The allowance to create replicas does not extend to trademarked names. At all.

Also, modders are very much at the mercy of both the legal teams of the games that they are creating for and the legal teams of the assets they are copying.
At any given stage you can receive a cease and desist aka a DMCA Notice from either party.

If you would like to know more about the legality of modding and common etiquette I strongly suggest joining the Nexus community. They are a veteran modding community who have been established since 2001.

The wiki for game modding has some useful info;

But as long as we don’t take money for our “illegal” usage of trademarks (Playstaion, Xbox, …) we shouldn’t get any problem with firms like Sony etc. - if you as Greenhartgames don’t press any charges - . Games like GTA use cars etc. for years and don’t have any problems. The other thing is if you allow us to publish them for the community.

If using trademarked names was illegal then no tv show, newspaper or book could ever mention any real brand name.
Competing companies can even use other brands in their advertisements! Where does this paranoia come from? I have never seen this kind of prohibition on any other game about mods.

So confused.

This topic is full of speculation and I will close it. Discussion based on personal opinions and speculation are useless in this case.

The bottom line is: Unless you have written authorization from the companies involved, do not use their trademarked names. If you do then you go against our Modding Agreement and you no longer have a right to mod the game.

The EULA has nothing to do with this. Only the Modding Agreement gives you the right to mod, not the EULA.
